I have seen them on many boats, bass boats, flats boats, and a few others. How can I build one of them? I want it to be about 20"X24" and be made from ply and fiberglass. I will be wanting to make 3 of them. Anyone sell a mold or anything to help shape it?

No on the mold. You can buy framed hatches that lie flush or nearly flush, if you're ok with purchasing.

Otherwise, you need to form a lip or rim for a hatch... there's a pic of how to make some hatch molding on the www.bateau2.com forums, you can basically make it out of trim molding glued to melamine, or a similar setup. You wax your homemade mold, and use it to make multiple straight sections of hatch rim, which you then glass together into the shape you want.

You form the lip to hold up the hatch, and also to act as a gutter for water, then glass it to the underside of your deck, so your new hatch cover sits flush with the rest of the deck.

If you don't care where the water goes (like in a ski locker) then you can just make a lip capable of holding up your hatch cover out of aluminum angle or fiberglass, and make the cover flush with the deck.

It's a lot simpler to buy a hatch than make one, as you might imagine.

I was contemplating on making my hatchs also until I found some made by Tempress Products LP (TempressProducts.com). They have different sizes also and you can opt to buy bins that drop down inside the hatch and stay in place by a lip inside the hatch. Then you can remove the bin if water gets inside or stow something under the bin, like a battery.
