I do a lot of boating on Falls Lake and I have never seen anyone trolling only casting?

There are stripers in the lake and I would imagine that trolling for stripers would be more productive than casting..

Thnx

What do you consider the "South". Here we troll all the time on the dividing line of Texas and Lousiana.
Not sure where Falls Lake is.

Re: How come no one trolls in the south

I think what he means is there are much more fishermen casting bait and lures than you would see trolling. I am from the south myself (originally) and fish on Lake Mi. now just about every weekend. I would think that trolling a bridge for specks using inline boards or big boards would be much more productive than casting or jigging. Although you hear of it sometimes you never really see many boats trolling. To be honest I can hardly wait until I bring my boat to La./Miss. Gulf area to chase a different kind of king and try some of the methods commonly used on the great lakes to pound a few of those toothy critters.

I think he's referring to the use of heavy rods for trolling.

I dunno. I don't use anything different for trolling than I do for casting, but I troll at slow speeds with normal lures.

Heck, sometimes, I troll to locate fish, then stop and start casting with the same rod and lure when I find them. Works for me.

I use a Telephone Pole(rod) when I am trolling at 4-5 mph when after the muskys..Reason being when you are trolling with some heavy lumber your not lookn for rod action..

I use some pretty big stuff in the fall and a heavier rod is needed..I creep troll when after the eyes and even bass..

Southern fishermen learn to fish for southern fish. .. . Bass, catfish, bluegills and crappies. . . with a cane pole or by casting and still fishing around weeds and structure.

Northern fishermen are more likely to have been initially taught to fish open, unobstructed water for trout, walleyes, esox, perch and other open water species.

We all tend to prefer methods that have served us well in the past.

ahhh... ok.. I use a 7'6" (light/med) downrigger rod for trolling with the riggers, 8'(Med) rods for the leadcore and 9' & 10' (Med/heavy)(telephone pole) rods for the dipsies allthough when there's a 12 to 15lb. Salmon or steelie running on the other end it's doesn't feel like a telphone pole. When trolling/fishing other species (walleye, smallies) I troll with my lighter gear. What I was saying though is if I ever went back down south I'd like to use some of the techniques I've learned here in Mi., inline boards and leaedcore, downriggers, dipsies & such.

Re: How come no one trolls in the south

I our area the trend has been to get a way from trolling in favor of light tackle vertical jigging with soft plastics. At times we have no choice but to troll because the fish are too scattered but once the fish orient towards cover or start to school in the fall jigging becomes the preferred method. It takes a good FF and an intimate knowledge of your target species but once mastered catching 10-30 lb. fish on 10-12lbs. tackle is quite rewarding. It will test limits of both your tackle and your angling skills

alot of people around here troll, mostly on the bigger lakes in a pontoon boat using shad raps deep divers etc,big shad and blugills at times trolling is good especially for those big rockfish, bot here you can usually catsh more bass by casting than trolling thats my experince, they have rockfish tournments at times and thats all they do with all those downriggers?

Catching fish on light tackle is not as productive as trolling but man the giggles and grins of a cast right where you meant, the strike, set the hook and the fight. Maybe better ways of catching but the thrill is special.

I live in the south and we do a lot of trolling. Mostly for redbreast & bream, but also for shad and speckled trout.

For the bream and redbreast, trolling around sandbars with a Rooster Tail (usually any color will do) or a specially made local beetle-spin type lure with yellow legs protruding from a black and yellow body (we call it 'Legs'). Don't use the Rooster Tail's if you think there are snags below... those treble hooks catch everything!

BTW, this is river fishing I'm talking about, not ponds. Haven't had much luck trolling in ponds for panfish. Have trolled ponds with rubber worms for bass tho.

Falls Lake is just north of Raleigh NC - I just found it curious that everyone was tossing lures and no one was trolling.

Most fish reports on the lake were all about crappie and bass fishing although there are stripers in the lake.

Thnx!

It would not be a pretty site if trolling became popular in the south. Cause it is really hard to drink a beer while casting lures all day. Heck just the thought of trolling makes me want to go out and buy a 12 pack.

Clarks Hill/ aka Thurmond Lake, we do some trolling of jigs for Crappie, and some for Hybrid/Stripers. Live lining and jigging are good too.
