on a 23 foot cuddy, 8.5' beam, what size tarp should i get? I don't want to be short on the front and sides, but i also don't want to get a mammoth that's hard to manage and then trails in the wind all winter long.

how much overage do you get (length and width)?

once you determine your size, consider the used billboard sign for a tarp, if you can't find one the right dimensions

I vote for 35' x 20'. You will prbably have to get the closest size to that.

^^^^ I agree, buy the silver and brown tarps from lowes. Use blue bungees from lowes to tie it off. They have composite hooks so no rust and they are wide so they don't stress the tarp tie down holes as much as skinny metal ones.

wow that's huge! i was thinking about 25X12 or 15. is that because it bows up over the boat?

i was going to get it from Harbour Freight like a recent poster here did. also thinking about getting a 100' reel of elastic cord (stuff that bungee cords are made from, only ~$24) and tying it off to the custom lengths i need. or maybe get plastic hooks for the reason chriscraft254 said...

anyone done that?

Most billboards today are painted on big, well, tarps. When the ad expires, they take them down and sell them as tarps. You are supposed to use them with the advertising side down, but I guess that depends whether you get Budweiser or Summer's Eve.

Re: how big a tarp do I get?

I have a 23ft cuddy. I covered mine 2 weeks ago with a 20 X 30 tarp. I laos put in a few stands to help it shed the snow, and to help it breathe. By the time it was coverd and tied down I had about 2" of swm platform showing. The tarp is tied down to the trailer frame with 3/8" rope. Snug but not tight enough to rip the eyes out of the tarp. Itflutters slightly in th ewind but no flapping that will let the wind start a rip.

The stands are just 2 2X4 set in an X-pattern, a single 2x4 stands on top of the X-shape. On top of the standing 2x4 I made a circular shape so there would be no sharp edges to wear on the tarp. I made 3 stands in total. One is about 5ft high for just behind the windshield, a 4ft one for just ahead of the motor access cover and a 2ft high on for on top of the cuddy. Together they make a steep tent shape that should keep most if not all of the snow off.

The tarp I used is a black and silver from Princess Auto. I put the black out to help absorb any heat the sun may be giving.

Here is the type of boat I covered.

The Harbor freight tarps are super cheap and might last a year before UV eats it up. Northern Tools sells some "pretty good" and some "better" tarps, but any silver, green or brown woven polypropylene tarp is not going to last very long. Northern Tools sells a woven cotten tarp that's yellow and coated with some type of waterproofing, but is much heavier and about twice as expensive, but would probably last for years! Good Luck!:)

there was a discussion on them a while ago; people seemed pleased with them. They are cheap so who knows how long they'll last but the cheapo's are barely good for a year. You can begin your search at this site: www. google.com

thanks for the tips! mine is also a Rinker ;)

i went to the site idonthaveaname suggested and with shipping it added up to $130. granted they're better quality than the cheapos.

My Monterey is 27' over all and 8.5' beam. I use a 30x20. I have a wooden structure that looks like a huge saw horse with a 30' beam for the boat length. It also has a sapport leg in the middle to help with the span. This has been great for keeping 99% of the water and crap out of the boat. It has been solid with major Nor Easter snow storms with 60+ MPH winds.
