How badly have I messed up my carb?

If you really want to get the jets out, buy yourself an impact screwdriver. Thats what is usually recommended. However, I have rebuilt probably 75 carbs since the 70's and as long as the orifice was not dinged, you don't need to remove the jets. THEY DON'T WEAR OUT, contrary to some mis-informed posters here. I have NEVER replaced one. Gasoline flowing thru an orifice does not corrode the hole nor make it grow. Spray the dang thing out, inspect it and don't worry about it. Way too many part replacers in this world.

Either find a way to get it apart or buy a new one. What if you find you need to change jets after all this? You'd be back right where you are now.

If he finds he needs to replace them, then he will have to get them out. Getting them out, for the sake that he MIGHT have to get them out makes little if any sense.
