Here's one for you guys.
I am getting some kind of black looking stuff in the carb. float bow.
The engine starts, runs, but I throttle it on down to get on plane, it shuts down. So i go threw all the checks and I see that I'm not getting fuel. I pull the filter out of the carb. and I find black... well it looks like black paint that has peeled off of something.
So I replaced all rubber hoses, added a fuel filter between the tank and fuel/water/filter. I have stainless steel fuel lines going to and from the fuel pump. The trash will build up in the filter in the carb. (it's a screen type) and push it open and then the trash well get in the float needle and flood it out, or clogg it up.

So where is it coming from???
? Do you think it's the diapham in the fuel pump coming apart?
It's the only place I can think of.
What do you all think???

Have no idea what engine you are working on. Would help to know Make, model, year, etc and rather it's a Volvo, Mercruiser, or OMC or ???????

i would try to pull the hose off of the tank and draw fuel through a hose directly out of the tank to check and see if there is garbage in the tank then you can rule that out anyway ... good luck

Thanks for your reply!
1990 Chris Craft, OMC ford 5.0 HO
I've empty the tank, removed the sending unit, inspected it and found nothing that looks like what I've found in the carb.
I replaced the rubber hose with the new style fuel line. I cut the old hose down the center to see if it was coming apart, but nothing.
So I installed a trackor type filter with a clear bowl (so I can see if trash was their) between the tank and the fuel/water separator.
Man, I'm stumped:confused:

Is there a coating or something inside the fuel pump. Mechanical fuel pump on the port side of engine...
From the fuel/water separator, to the fuel pump, from the fuel pump to the carb. is stainless steel lines.

Can I bolt on a block off plate where themech. pump is now, and put a ele. fuel pump on it?
I'm having trouble find this pump for this engine. The outlet is at the 5 o'clock and inlet is at 7 o'clock.
Any advise on this??

With the correct pump. Not the high pressure ones for fuel injected. Usually they are around 3-5 lbs pressure.

Re: How am I getting trash in the carb.

Could be coming from the fuel pump, is there any fuel in the clear tube going to your carb ?

Can't find a replacement fuel pump ? for a Ford 5.0 ?

Well, the pump body's can be rotated to if needed ( usually depends on the brand )

And have you looked on Iboats ?

Also NAPA Autoparts sells Sierra Marine Parts, as do many Marine Repair places..

Ps.. Suggestion, find the part number then Google.com it.

Thanks 6meter for psi. range!

Kainon, I have a great napa store here at home, very helpfull folks! I've found a couple pumps, but not a factor one. I was hoping to find one so I could use the factor stainless steel line. I didn't know you could take them apart and repoision it. What about the seals? I guess can re-do the lines to match the new pump, and move the fuel/water sep.

Re: How am I getting trash in the carb.

i had a marine electric pump on mine and always ran great except at full throttle after about 5 seconds would start to starve for fuel then if i pulled it back it would idle up and run fine again ... long story short i found out that it wouldnt keep up trying to pull the fuel through the check valve at tank under full throttle .... i put a manual fuel pump back on it and now it runs fine at full throttle ... something to consider

This is what was happening to me at WOT!
This is when I found the trash in the float bowl needle seat.
I can't find a rebuild kit for the pump (OMC), So I think I'll get a after market one. Any idles?

I have a completely different engine, but when I was changing my fuel filters, I noticed the bowl where the fuel pump filter goes was rusting and the black paint was flaking off (tiny pieces). Maybe a connection with yours?
