Re: Hotroding the Ford 460

Hi Hollis, did you ever find out how much horsepower you have? I am not real up on what speed you should acheive with a jet drive, you might be right in the ballpark. I would check with owners of similar boats.

If you still want to know how much more HP is required to go faster, let me know how HP you have.

If you want to go really fast you may be looking at a outboard, V-drive or sterndrive style boat, but 55 is pretty fast.

The only 460 I ever messed with was for a customer with a Pinto dragcar. He had the best { 68 or 69 ? } production line heads and the ex ports still were a joke. There were at least two cast in bosses for air injection or something similar. Lots of grinding required to bring them up to spec. The intake side just needs the typical bowl clean up.

Fords like lots of oil pressure.

Doing a careful torqueing job on that motor will give you a hernia ! Either the heads or the mains get torqued to 145 ft lbs if I remember correctly.

Well said , speed costs money so how fast do you want to go ? If your going to dump money into a old Cobra package go right ahead , or you can do this and enjoy many years of boating worry free.Go here

Hollis, in the late 70's we took our fleet of ford trucks, w/460s and changed out the timing gears, (cam). it was an emmisions thing here in Calif. We used the gear for off road vehicles,,,as fordman has already stated.

Don't know what is inside your ride....sl

Why not just go with a crate motor and start there ??? Unless you just want to punish yourself. Lots of manufactured, rotating horsepower out there for the asking.
