Hot water from my telltail

Today on the water I heard a loud audible tone which raised and slowed down as I did with the throttle. I have no idea what it is and this is the second time I have taken the boat out. The first time we had some engine trouble so I brought it home, changed the plugs, wires and gear oil. I wasn't completely comfortable pulling the lower gear box off but I'm thinking I should have now but anyway, the water out of my telltail is VERY hot. I can't hold my hand under it for longer than 1 second with out it burning me.

Now I know it shouldn't be this hot but is that a sign that my engine is over heating? If so what could cause it to over heat, a bad impeller or water pump?

How good is the flow? If impeller was shot it would not pump. I think you most likely have a clog causing water flow to slow or pump is not working well enough to get proper flow.

You probably want to pull the T-Stat cover off and test the thermostat in a pan of water. "Cook it" so-to-speak. If you start with a regular, luke-warm pan of water, put the cool thermostat in that and let the water heat up, as if you were going to boil hot dogs. Using a kitchen thermometer, you should be able to see the t-stat open, you'll be able to watch that spring move, once the water is between 160-180 degrees. If there is no movement, then you need a t-stat. If, however, it does move, then you may have a water blockage inside the motor's water passageways.

The alarm you heard was very likely the overheat alarm. Can you clear up, though, what you said in the beginning? Did YOU slow the motor down, or did it slow down itself? Post back the results of the t-stat cooking test and we can get you moving from there.

What engine/year are we talking about here? A better description of your warning horn would be helpful. Later engines have a number of different warning horns-which indicate various problems from overheat to VRO oiling problems.

Re: Hot water from my telltail

Hi sorry I tried to edit my post to give year and HP but it wouldn't let me save the changes...

*Flow itself isn't bad or I don't think it's bad. This is my first boat and I am learning about everything as fast as I can. The stream is steady and although shooting out it doesn't have a bunch of pressure. Should it?

*I can remove the t-stat and check all that, thanks for the ideas on that. As far as clearing things up, sure can. When we first got out on the water it didn't make the noise at all. The engine was pretty much at idle as we were still in the no wake zone (50 feet from the ramp to the buoy, running for maybe 5 mins) at which it was a long high pitch tone beeeeeeeeeep from behind the throttle wall. As I turned off the engine and power it would also cut the tone off. Once started back up nothing until I got out of the no wake zone I was doing around 40 mph and it started back, beep-beep-beep-beep, real fast. As I pulled back on the throttle to slow down the beeps did too, until I was at idle again and beeeeeeeeeep.

The engine in question here is a 1988 200HP Evinrude. I do not know the s/n or the m/n as some idiot painted the entire engine and covered the ID plate.

Thanks guys, I am really stumped here.

A constant horn is either a fuel restriction (high fuel vacuum) or an overheat. That engine has a sensor in each head to detect overheats and a vacuum switch to detect high fuel suction. A rapid beeping is a problem with the fuel/oil VRO pump. Both are pretty significant problems and need to be addressed before running. The horn will reset each time you turn the key off.

I'm not 100% sure yet but after taking it down the LMS it might be a bad thermostat. I did take it apart and this is what I found.

I also ended up finding out some other things about the engine as well. One of my bleeder hoses was broken,

Then the guy asked me if I had an Oil reserve onboard... I told him no, that I was mixing my gas/oil myself. Apparently the engine should be doing this but along the way someone took it out and left all the wiring harness connected. So I was getting a VRO alarm.
