"HOT" light when engine cold

I have a 1996 Johnson 115hp whose "hot" light comes on simply after turning the key to the auxiliary position (engine not running). The engine is cold...it has not been run for several days. The diagnostic mode beeps once and all of the warning lights come on temporarily, then go off (like normal). However the "Hot" light comes one before the engine is started. The warning tone only occurs if I start the engine. I don't believe the engine is actually o/h since a digital thermometer reflects a maximum temp. of 141 degrees on the outside of each head. I've tried the following with no apparent success:

1) Jiggled wires on the engine and occasionally got the light to flicker. However, once sunlight began to warm things up (70-75 F) the flickering stopped.
2) The light stays on even when the (2) sensors are disconnected (tan wires).

Can someone please offer some suggestions? I can't seem to locate a short in the engine or anywhere on the boat. I have ruled out sensor problems since the light remains on even when they are unplugged. I am completely baffled...ideas? Thanks in advance!!

Re: "HOT" light when engine cold

use a multimeter with a manual to check for continuity and short to ground, etc.
