Hooking up a "starting" battery

For having a dedicated starting battery, can I just hook up the 2 main engine cables to that motor since thats what takes the highest draw?

Then have everything else to the deep cycle?

yes, that would be one option.

Assuming there is no other connections between the Batteries,
The start Battery would be the only one that receives charging current from the alternator.
The deep cycle would have to be recharged externally.
