Re: Hook in the head

Great story!! I have a "hook out" tool that I have never needed and to be honest I'm not even sure where it is. I have hooked my self a few time but I have been fortunate enough to never get the barb deep enough to be an issue.

Pretty much every time I have been hooked it has been while removing a treble and the fish shakes violently causing the rear treble to lodge in my hand somewhere.

I will NEVER forget the time this happened where I was holding a big bass, he shook lodging the rear treble into the meat below my thumb. Here I am with a hook in my hand and a flailing fish on the other end of that lure. I grabbed that fish with both hands and squeezed the heck out of it so it couldn't shake. I next had to have my buddy get the pliers and remove the hooks from both the fish and myself.

It wasn't the pain of the hook that scared me. It was the knowledge that one good shake ant that hook would be DEEP. Talk about time going into slow motion. That 10 seconds feels like 5 minutes in my memory.

Re: Hook in the head

I stuck a small treble right in the middle of my thumb pad alone one day.It didnt hurt much and I thought id just wait and get it out a home w help from the wife but then thought it would be hard to load the boat alone w one hand so i pulled out the pliers,I pulled alittle and oww!! i decided a quick firm yank would be better, about to go when I realized it might be a good idea to remove the hook from the bait so as not to put the other hook in my hand in the process, once removed i yanked it out. supriseing how tough skin is.I kept fishin and 45 mins later I caught a 6 lb bass, only fish of the day.late january.

this story perfectly illustrates why barbless is the way to go... before you said it, I could tell you weren't actually fishing barbless b/c 1) you wouldn't have spent so much time getting your fish off the line, 2) you wouldn't have had a hard time removing the hook from you friend's head.

With barbless hooks, there is WAY less damage to the fish. Especially pike that can often take a hook deep, you really don't need barbs.. all they do is tear up the gills trying to get them out. We've been 100% barbless by law here for years now... I fish barbless now all the time, even if I'm in a place that doesn't require it. You do need a bit more finesse to land smallmouth when going barbless.... especially if they're going airborne, but it doesn't handicap you as much as most people would think.

Re: Hook in the head

I was out fishing the other day. Just mounted a new trolling motor and wanted to give it the quick test.

When loading the boat on the trailer I was moving the rods from the benches to the floor for the ride home after pulling up the ramp. Literally less than a 1/4 mile. Well the rod with the crank bait went sliding through my hand and the hook got me good. buried the hook to the bend. Well. you gotta cut the braid and drive home. I pass my wife leaving and wave frantically because you know we do things like that. She stops when she see's smoke coming off the tires. Seems she couldn't understand why I was waving a lure at her till I walked over and opened my hand and it didn't fall. Needless to say this is the 3rd one I've had like this. It just happened that I had watched a video of how to remove these hooks...

Operation: 14" heavy mono.. I used Braid. Cut off all other hooks on treble. Wrap twice around hook bend. Hold eye close to skin. Clean hard yank.. The wife was cringing because she wasn't around for the first two like this.

First hooking: while out fishing with my daughter I got a small spinner buried in my chin. Cut and pushed that one through. Use a cork with a hole in it to hold the skin back around the hook point so it pushes through.

Second hooking: 3" Clouser on streamer hook. That one was barbless.

I recommend the mono trick if the hook is not in an area that has nerves or major veins or arteries. Should work in the head since none of us have any brians once we get married....

That's definately the trick to get those hooks out !!! must have used it about a dozen times during my fishing life. It needs the absolute trust of your "victim" though and make sure you push down hard3 on the eye. It doesn't work, however when you get the same treblle in both hands at the same time with an angry pike at the other end of your lure. Did that 2 weeks ago, had to put the motor in reverse with my foot, steering with the other foot (wind was blowing to the rocky shore) yodeling whenever the pike gave some good shakes to rub it in.....man I was winded!!! Luckyly the pike fell off and jumped clean in the water, leaving me with the lure still attached to both hands. I did get it out in the end but it took a long time, much longer than with the mono-trick

Re: Hook in the head

everyone go get a heavy needle like an 18 guage.... u can slide it down along the hook and catch the barb tip with the needle then back the 2 out together..... learned this one in the ER.... now carry a heavy needle in the 1st aid kit and the tackle box

you catch the point of the barb in the hollow part where the fluid would come out and back the needle and hook out together. you can prob find it on youtube also
