Re: Honda cutting out.

Thanks my friend . Yeah cover off was one of the first things I tried..no difference. Engine runs in neutral forever...then stalls in gear. Wonder if the CDI unit is triggering the neutral function. I did disconnect the switch and wired it to bypass switch but it still goes into the cdi unit doesn`t it confused:

if not let me know

Re: Honda cutting out.

I have a factory manual and a multi meter . I have checked the resistance permutations on CDI and some of them are way above the figures I have...especially on the neutral switch function wires that go into CDI unit but also on some others.

throw the ohm test away
you need to buy a dva from repair or maybe on here

Yes I was told that you could not rely on the resistance values. What is this meter and what is it measuring?

Right have asked that company if they would post that model. I suppose it measures voltage while running the engine? How would you suggest a test of my Honda having read this long post?

Re: Honda cutting out.

Was told DVA meter only measures peak voltage..... having seen the symptoms on thread JUSTINTIME........could you hazard an opinion on the problem?

Re: Honda cutting out.

Glad to see you are still plugging away at your motor. Can be very flusterating as you know already. I had mine out Thursday, week ago, as things go, it started and ran great for 6 hours w/o missing a beat. Had a friend w/me just in case. Good day fishing though, 2 nice salmon. Weather permitting, I will try for at least one more day before the 1st of Noveember when fishing shuts down here. We have had a storm hanging around last few days, hard to fish with 50-55 mph gusts.

Nice fishing my friend would love to see pics and methods etc.......no rush.
We have flat calms here..typical autumnal and poor conditions for flyfishing for our Seatrout. You know what like it is...not enough or too much.

Was out testing it yesterday. The symptoms occurred as usual. I still have my theories but like you am running out of time. 11days left of our season here. Good Luck!

Re: Honda cutting out.

Fair enough Justintime. But what will this tell me when there is no problem until engine stops. When it stops I have no readings and no way of getting any volt readings. I appreciate your help but your answers do not elaborate on anything past one line. Let me try to explain as best I can.

My engine goes into fault mode when it cuts out at any speed.........BUT that can be the fault mode over because it then starts instantly.....ALWAYS and then pulls away OR doesn`t. Now when it stalls and then starts and sits in idle do you think that it could still be in fault mode? I think it still could be if the moment I am going to put it in gear it is gonna stall.

I can`t choose that moment but if it stalls on going into gear it usually does it a few times or not at all. Are you with me? Right! Is there anything you would try and get a measure on at that moment when idling before it stalls going into gear........eg low output on one side of HT circuit from coil. Would you use the DVA meter in that instance?

I can`t help feeling that I am losing spark on one cylinder and being lost spark ignition it is cutting engine. It always starts again in neutral but that could be because there is no load. Another thing I thought of doing was pull a plug cap after it cuts out and sticking another plug in it to dangle and spark away. The engine would now run on one cylinder but if it stalled.......what would it tell me ? Could the CDI unit cause this. Could a Neutral only mode be getting triggered inside Cdi unit itself. I have bypassed neutral switch to discount the switch itself. It is also adjusted correctly ..

Thanks
Alex

Re: Honda cutting out.

Just an update, Lexi. I fished again today for 7 hours, ran perfect all day. Must have been something in my carb. Now I have a noise in my 1989 Merc 200 hp that I am going to have to mess with. Good Luck w/you engine.

Re: Honda cutting out.

Crazy thought on this current problem. Is there any chance that a nut or similar falling down the well could cause the engine to stall intermittently. Any experiences? Yeah I know .......desperate idea:D

Re: Honda cutting out.

Don`t know if this thread will bump back up to the top........but here goes.

Latest stage was to try a carb from another known good engine which is in weekly use.

Engine went great for first 18 hrs. Taking it out one morning.........it started the same symptoms again.

Re: Honda cutting out.

Lexi, I was wondering if you were still around. It sure would be great if you can get that think running right. It has been a long battle.
Check the electrical connections on the starboard side of the engine9I think it's a coil or condernsor, about 2.5 inches square w/2 connections.) At the end of April, we were getting ready to go out and I was attempting to start my Honda 15 and did not have any spark to the plugs. We disconnected the electrical fasteners and put them back on and it started right up. As luck would have it I blew my 200 hp Merc on the way out and had to come back in 7 miles on the 15, thank goodness it ran great. I now have a new Honda 225 w/just 2 hours on it.

Thanks mate. I have another engine (HONDA 8)which I am fixing up. Once running good I will swop out components one at a time........next is CDI unit.
