Good day boaters.
So was out running in the salt and noticed a hesitation made power back to the dock but boat was unable to power up on trailer. Checked dipstick and the latte was overflowing the dipstick. Got it home drained the old and refilled with fresh oil cuz I won't be able to tear it down for 2 days. Did a compression test running 120 on all 3 cyc. So I have rebuilt auto engines in the past but first outboard. I have the service manual just looking for thoughts and words or wisdom on this project.

4 stroke engines tend to "make oil" that's increasing significantly the oil level inside crankcase due to ambient factors. Has this issue happened before ? On a faulty or out of spec gasket you will see a salty white color on the head gasket contour, specially if engine is used at sea, will not harm engine to re torque head gasket to be sure it's inside factory specs.

If engine continues to make oil, fill oil to 3/4 in dipstick and change oil and filter each 100 worked hours.

Thanks for the input. I'll try torquing them and double checking. Planning to do a leak down test tomorrow. This is the first time it has ever happened. I always check oil pre and post trip. It was literally pouring out of the dipstick spout. How much oil is usually made? What is the mechanism be hide making oil? Thanks again. Cheers

Well just to help someone who may run into this into the future. It appears I discovered I had a pinhole on the exhaust side of the engine block. It appears that when the water was circulating thru the water jacket it was filling up the number bottom cyl. So there was not an issue with a compression or head gasket failure?pure corrosion over time. If anyone is having issues with milky oil and steady compressions no prior overheat issues I would suggest you look into block failures. Cheers.

Sailor, I've seen a hole in that same location several times. I generally just replace the block with a used block, or a used short block.
