Re: Homemade spark tester

Someone posted this design which I thought was easy to make.

Thanks Ezeke, I think that's the one I was looking for. Yes, one can go buy one, but rather isn't that why we work on outboards...because we we like to tinker? Also, didn't anyone mention we're in a recession? :-| Ten bucks is ten bucks (twelve with fuel), plus I've got all the parts. :)

HOMEMADE SPARK TESTER:
Grab the bare spark plug wire with your right hand.
Crank the motor.
With a good spark, your entire arm will go numb for 20 minutes. You may even pee yerself.
Anything less is not acceptable.
NOTE: Don't use yer left hand. That's too close to your heart.....

PMSFL tx1961whaler ...... that you do to a mate on April 1st

On the Yamaha range of outboard motors what is the secondary firing voltage the ignition system capable of pushing out?

On automotive vehicles the ignition systems depend on the manufacture and the type of ignition system itself a rule of thumb is 1mm gap = 1KV (1000volts)

So good points (keeting) ignition system will jump a 30mm-35mm gap which equates to 30-35KV but the electronics ignition system will go to 45KV and then some of the waste spark ignition systems will punch-out a 70KV spark which is over 70mm in length it will jump.

So if you have a weak heart be very carefully when zapping someone with a secondary ignition spark.

Dam I hate my mother in-law LOL maybe see can be a guinea pig and i use her to test my ignition system LOL kidding.

I'm having some sort of ignition problem on my Yamaha 90HP outboard 90A engine also so I'm just reading more and more threads.

cheers
