1974 IMP 18'6 Ford302, Holley four barrel. Almost done with the restore on the boat. When running it (on muffs) the engine sound fine, good idle speed, etc. However, when I turn off the motor, some fuel leaks out of the carb at the thottle pivot shaft. It leaks some on both sides of the carb, but more so on the port side. The guy before me said he had rebuilt it (I have his receipts for the kit),but he may have only test run it a couple of times. I don't know if there is a seal or bushing on that shaft the should ave been replaced or ?????? Any ideas or suggestions?

I don't know about Holley's,.....
But,...
I know that Rochester's Will wear into the actual carb Body, at the throttle shafts..........

And,.....
A Carb Rebuild is a 50/50 proposition,...... At Best......

I mean,.. A 32 year old Carb,... Just Might be Worn Out............
If it's the Original, of course.........

Rats! Thanks for the input, Bondo. Should I just replace the throttle body assembly or look for a whole new set carb?

I Donno rebars,......... I can't See what you've got there....... :D

I kinda Really like the Weber/Merc./Edlebrock/ Carter Clones.......
That 1406 Edlebrock is a pretty Inexpensive marine replacement.......
I believe it'll bolt right onto that Holley Sq. bore........

Really Simple to Tune,... Clean,.. or generally work on.............

Does it have a vent on the fuel bowl? If yes, then it is auto and do not use it on the boat. Could result in a big boom noise

Post pics and I bet the more knowledgeable members will reply

I'll have it checked out. I could not see any serial numbers or cfm ratings on the carb (still on the engine.) If I need to replace it, is 450 cfm right for a Ford 302?

Re: Holley four barrel leak

If its flooding when you cut it of there are three possibilities:
.incorrect float level or saturated float, where gas over flows into venturies, collects on throttle plates and seaps out of the throttle shaft......adjust or replace as needed.
..needle in seat not seating properly,,,,,reacts the same as incorrect float level or saturated float
...too much fuel pressure,,,,,,,forces needle off of seat, reacts the same as incorrect float level or saturated float

Reel Poor: I spoke with my local merc shop via phone and he said the same thing you did regarding the floats as probable suspects. I'll check the carb for adjustment screws and/or have it re-built. Thanks for the advise.

Re: Holley four barrel leak

Your first post stated leaking at the throttle shaft. This isn't serviceable by you, there are white plastic seals on the shaft, between the shaft and the throttle plate. The cost of a new throttle plate is prohibitive. I have gotten great four barrel carbs off EBay. If you go the EBay route, a rebuild will be necessary. I recommend a Holley rebuild kit. A 450 cfm will run on a 302. The cam in the 302 will handle a 600 cfm with no problems. The carb "list" number is located on the choke plate housing. Look at the front of the carb, upper right side of the choke housing.

Re: Holley four barrel leak

It turns out that the carb is not a marine carb anyway. So I'm going to shop around for a new marine carb.

Thanks for all the information and guidance.
