Hole in Water Pump Housing

I've been messing with the a 1989 Force 50hp now for a little while that has not been cooling properly. I noticed when I pulled the water pump housing to replace the impeller the housing was beat up and even had a hole all the way through it. I'm prettysure this is not supposed to be there, but it almost looks like it was drilled.

What do you think?

Corrosion hole? Flaw in the casting?

How are the edges of the inside of the water pump?
From that pic it looks scored up. You might need another one.

Unless it's some sort of weep hole you could fill it with JB weld to get you going while your new one is on order.

The inside of the housing has a bunch of indentions...almost like sand and trash had gotten in there. Also I found some dirt/sand when I pulled the thermostat out to replace. For some reason it?s still not getting water. So far I?ve ran a coat hanger in the water inlet at the foot and put air to it. When I put the air to it I can feel it blowing at the thermostat and exhaust holes on the back of the motor.

Which way should the impeller vanes be pointing?

you really you need a new housing but I have Had some success in cleaning the inside and coating with epoxy resin...wipe in on the end of your finger....the fingers of the impeller will adjust themselves when you turn the motor but the ends should still have the round bobbles on the end not worn flat...you can turn the impeller over if you can get the roll pin out and use it the other way ..your risk...best bet is always to have a tell tale ( pisser) so you can be sure you have flow . You may have to take the cover off the exhaust chest to clean out the water ways

That tiny pin hole is ment to be there... It allows the air to bleed from the impeller in order to prime the cooling system...

I found a good pic of a new and saw the same hole, so as yall said it's supposed to be there. I'm just going to order a new one.

I don't see why the housing would keep it from peeing completely though or would it???

Have you checked the imppler, I thought mines were fine affter removing the water pump 3 times I discovered that the rubber had spun on the inner side and caused it to pump some time and dont other times.

It has a brand new water pump, but I'll look it over again today.

What method are you using to test the pump?s flow?
1. Good fitting muffs
2. Deep in a barrel
3. Boat in a body of water?

If my 1970 35 HP Chrysler is not deep in a barrel (attached) it w/n flow due to a few inches. Where as, I notice some can get flow using a lower bucket with water not too high above the inlet. I feel the muffs are more of a force flow for testing etc vs the water pump.

Also check to see if your water tube is seated good. jow

allways test in a barrel a garden hose will force feed the system, I also sometimes use a 1/2 drill on the drive shaft and the lower unit in a 5 gallon pail if it fits and spin the drive shaft and you WILL see it pumping if its working this is a good way to check your self if you did the impelller right before you go tru the task of putting the lower unit back on the engine I had a rotten hole in the lower unit that even with a complete water pump kit it would not draw water so allways use a pail to test FLUSH YOUR ENGINE WITH A HOSE good luck bob

Were you able to get the water pump to pump? I believe my problem is similar so I'm eager to hear more about your progress. I removed the screw at the top of the power head where I might install a tell-tale but no water pumps (I backed it into the lake just to test) and I ran it about 30 - 45 seconds. As far as I can tell, the impeller and water pump housing aren't bad enough that something shouldn't pump. I can force water up the brass tube with a hose & get it to come out of the screw hole so I don't suspect any blockage.

A local boat mechanic suggested that I might have a blown head gasket or exhaust gasket causing water to escape before getting to the top of the power head. The engine seems to run just fine and I didn't detect any steam or air pulses from the screw hole at the top so I'm not sure if gaskets are my problem.

Have you considered the possibility of blown head gaskets or exhaust port gaskets? I don't want to pull the head or exhaust just to check but that may be my next option unless you found something in your quest. Again, I'm eager to hear your results!

Update: I have water pumping now. I pulled the foot off again and forced watre from the top and the bottom and had a clean passage, which answer my question if it was still blocked or not. Check the impeller again which was fine and reinstalled it based on the instructions on here. Filled up a
55gal drum and hello water. I had good water coming out the exhaust holes and the over heat buzzer didn't come on.

I think the main thing that helped me was making sure there is no blocks in the copper tube or up top. I checked this by running water from the top where the tell-tale should be and the bottom where the water pump housing goes in.

Hello wickware! I've got an '82 Chrysler 140 hp and can't get water to pump to the top out of the "tell-tale" screw hole on the top of the power unit. I bought the boat and it had sat about five years before I bought it so I don't really know how it ran before. Of course it came with the "it was well cared for and ran well when it was parked" comments. I backed the boat into the lake deep enough to reach the old water line on the transom and that put the water pump well below the water's surface. I hope all of that made sense and answered your questions.

The engine idles well and is responsive when I blip the throttle at the carbs but it just won't bring water to the top. I'm afraid to run it too long without seeing some water so I've only run it about 30 - 45 seconds by my best guess. I'll check the compression on the cylinders soon and see if that might give me a clue about the head gasket.

Poncho Villa, I should have asked you to post and answered separately to omit confusion w/o reading the entire post. This info got confusing when I realized we had switched motors/problems, most of all the info below might not apply to your problem if you h/n pulled the water pump and inspected it.


1. I followed the info on depth and that should be good IMO.

2. I c/n relate compression having anything to do with cooling water flow if it is running fine.

3. Have you checked the screens good at the water inlets for restrictions?

4. The impeller to shaft has a good pin or key that sitting or trash d/n hurt related to spinning?

5. Have you tried Bob?s pretest with the ?? drill or thought about it at this point?

6. Have you tested it w/o the thermostat being curious? The water tube is connects fine? jow

it seems most have not installed a tell tale. its pretty easy, and it works good. check out the stickys. also here is a link to see it working on my old force. you can see that the thermostat is working correctly. motor starts, then water comes out the new pee hole

Is that an original tale tell? Or u made it? I’m having a problem with my suzuki dt30 I changed the impeller and still no flow.. I take out the thermostat and get great flow out the thermostat housing and tell take but seems like exhaust is mixing in
