Hi Guys,

I need to get my boat off the trailer so I can get the trailer weighed. I figured I would rig up this crude hoist system but then started having second thoughts.

Right now my main consern is if the handles on the back of the boat
( a 1964 16' Jupiter ) were strong enough to handle the weight of the boat and motor, They are threw bolted and the transom is in good shape, the motor is a 40 HP Yamaha

I have had the boat hoisted ( about 6". )off the trailer with this set up for about 15 min with no issues, even rocked the boat a little to make sure the straps would not slip or 2x4 would kick out.

However, when I yank the trailer out to get it weighed it will be suspended in this manner for a couple of hours.

looking for your guys opinion of the set up, surely somebody here has hoisted a boat of this size before....

Many Thanks,

I think you should be ok. Ive suspended the front of a 15 ft with just one end of a tie down around a joist and the other end in the front eyelet. The back I just lifted up on a couple buckets. If your most concerned with the back end take that jack stand youve got sitting on the garage floor and slide that under the bottom center of the boat, or if you have a floor jack just put it under the back and lift it up a touch just to take some of the weight off the handles.

The bow eye and the back handles are all you needed, if you could reach the bow eye from the overhead. You did fine with what you've got.

always remember that the 4" wide racheting tiedown strap you use to keep boat on trailer works pretty well as a lifting sling.

a 40hp only weighs <200 lbs anyway

In Ohio, you don't have to remove the boat to get the weight slip filled out. The BMV accepts what the scale says less the weight of the boat and motor estimated, or using known specs.

Ohio will plate your trailer in this fashion. If you can blow this link up, the weight is on the right.

Really ? I was told at the DMV that I needed the trailer weighed without any cargo ( AKA boat ) to get the cheepest rate on the plate, ( because the reg. fee goes by weight )

when I called a scrap yard with a lisenced scale and asked if they could weigh the trailer with the boat and then subtract the weight on the weight slip they said no.

I'm not doubting what you say because I have had trouble with the people at our DMV giving accurate info on historical plates. But I do wonder, how current is your information ?

Dude, I have plated many boat trailers in Ohio. You ask the DMV where to go for a trailer weight. Then you go there, and tell them the boat weighs 900 pounds and the outboard 275 pounds, they weigh the total, and subtract. Are you telling me this is about a few bucks?

Listen, our tin cans are so far away in weight to cause a premium plate charge. We are small potatoes.

You wanna go hoisting your boat off your trailer for this?

Dude, launch the frickin boat on Erie then, and get a weight????????? Geeez

You know what? Go ahead and hoist it...........just for shiiiits and giggles.

I don't post advice, especially in my home State unless 100% sure. Do what you want.
