I recently bought a 1973 Sea Ray SRV 200. Excellent shape! My problem is with the HIN. The HIN on this boat is SERO2446M 73K. Now, there is not suppose to be that O or zero in the fourth position. That's where the problem is. According to USCG it should be SER2446M 73K. WI wont register with the HIN how it is. They want to issue a state HIN. I declined since this HIN had to be legal at some point. Other wise it couldn't have been sold when new. The first pic is of the mentioned HIN. The second is from a 1974 model of the same boat.

I sincerely hope someone can provide a reasonable explanation for this. Even better if there's documentation to support that.

Could ask Searay and my guess is the kid at the factory messed up and everyone prior to you had it listed as SERM2446M73K

What does the registration show on the paper work you have from PO?

Hey take some gelcoat and fill in the O

I asked Sea Ray and they were not of any help. I talked with USCG and he seemed to think that it was a factory mistake. The problem is it's rather ancient. Sea Ray has no idea why this happened. I've thought about the filling in the O. LOL

I looked on the USCG site and it says the HIN cann't be changed unless approved in writing by the USCG commander. So I sent an email with a photo of the affected HIN. Hopefully they will let me change it.

The MI title has the HIN as SERMOO2446M7. That's also not correct.

So, on USCG siate, it says this.:
When the state encounters a discrepancy within a 12 Character HIN on a boat older than 10 years from the date of manufacture: ➢ The state should: ▪ Issue a state-assigned HIN using the Current Format. ▪ Best Practice: When the state assigns a new HIN, the Legacy (aka original) HIN must be made a part of the boat’s record, the owner should retain a copy for their records, and a copy should be kept on the boat.

Well if you can only convince the state to do that
So far they've done everything to USCG specs. I've emailed them what I posted here. They wanted to give me a state HIN but I declined at the time.
