Re: HIN Wrong on Title

does KY require an inspection? In other words would I physically have to take the boat there? I do have some family in KY.

Re: HIN Wrong on Title

Can anyone tell me if all MI boat registrations start with MC.

So far as I have ever seen, state registration's across the country begin with a 2 letter state code. And, yes, Michigan's number begins MC.

Re: HIN Wrong on Title

Is the "title" document you've been referring to the same as the Michigan "Certificate of Number" registration document shown on this link? If not, what is the name of your "title" document and what state is it from?

By the way, CMB is a manufacturer's identification code (MIC) for "Custom Steel Boats, Inc." and would normally be the first three characters of the HIN for their boats.

I suspected that too, but with only 7 other characters and being a Bayliner built in '99 it just didn't seem logical to go down that path. There are or have been 27 Bayliner Marine Corps., but their codes all begin with "B".

BTY ayres481, just for grins, what is the Hull ID? Use xxxxx for the serial number part if you wish to keep the ID annonymous.

Re: HIN Wrong on Title

I went to the MI BMV (actually sec. of state) and I lucked out getting a very helpful clerk. I THINK that I have it taken care of. She submitted for a corrected title with my name on it, but she said it would take 5-6weeks to get it. I am fine with that as we are going into winter. I just hope it really happens. Among other things I had to fill out a statement saying that I own the boat, etc. I have definately learned my lesson and will always check it out prior to purchase.
In regards to the actual HIN on the boat, I did put it in as a search at on of the boatfax type websites. I did not pay for the complete report, but it did come back as a 99 Bayliner. The # on the hull is BIY*********.
Thanks for everyones help, my fingers are crossed hoping that it will be corrected. I have to hand it to the clerk that I dealt with, she was trying hard to figure out a way that I could get an instant title and walk out with it today, unfortunately that was not possible.
Thanks Again

Re: HIN Wrong on Title

The title that I was talking about was the actual title for the boat, not the registartion (although I do have a copy of the prior owners registration and it also shows the wrong HIN).

All's well that ends well ... glad you can go back to boating and forget the paperwork nightmare. I guess we'll just never know exactly how it happened.

I'll second that. It's such a breath of fresh air to find someone willing to work with you on fixing a title problem. Just imagine the crap they have to deal with day in day out.

Here's what the Coast Guard database has on BIYB85CLG***

BIY =
BAYLINER MARINE
BRUNSWICK FAMILY BOAT CO INC
17825 59TH AVE NE
ARLINGTON, WA 98223
Phone: (360) 435-5571

Out of Business: March 2009

B85CL =
Serial number - code meaning might be found in a manual for your model Bayliner. (this is the part I figured you might want to mask with xxxxx)

G* =
Production month (G=July) so the year should be 9 for 1999. If it's an 8 it would be 1998. They build ahead just like the auto industry does.

** = Model Year (99) 1999

Re: HIN Wrong on Title

Thanks for everyones help. I will feel much better when I have that new title in hand (then I will feel like it ended well). I should have it in 5 weeks or so, and then I get to turn around and tranfer the title to IN and wait another 5 weeks or so. Oh well, at least its fall, not the start of summer!
Thanks Again!

So your the third owner?
Did the second owner have ALL of the paperwork in his name or was it all still in the original owners name?

I bet the numbers have been screwed up since new.
Dealer sells a new boat.
Dealer does all the paperwork and registration for the new buyer.
Nobody at the DMV verifies any numbers which is/was a common thing.
Somehow the owner is given the wrong boat and trailer.
Probly an identical rig and the yard boys prepped the wrong one by mistake.

Yes I am the third owner Jeeperman. I think it has been wrong since the initial title was released, but its not another boat (I really think it was more like the loan acct.# or something).
By the way Jeeperman what kind of Jeep do you have? I am a fellow Jeeper (79' CJ7).

Re: HIN Wrong on Title

Threads like this one taught me a lot about boat buying. I lucked out on my first, but since then everything gets scrutinized.

Seller's name and address have to match what's on the title/registration. HIN stamped on the boat also has to match what's on the paperwork, as does the reg. # on the bow.

If any of those are out of whack, I'll walk. The seller can give me a call after it's been corrected...

Best of luck- looks like you're off to a good start, tho. Please report back. Many of us will be interested in the outcome.

Re: HIN Wrong on Title

One of the things I have learned the hard way is to check more than just the VIN or HIN but to make sure the person I am buying from is the name on the title.

Twice now I've bought conveyances that were flipped by an intermediate owner who then cheated the state out of its fees by not titling or registering it in their own name. Both times I was left with a title that (although not hot) had names of people who no longer lived in the area. Any errors detected by the DMV or State Wildlife Commission (in North Carolina) will have to be with some cooperation from the original owner. That can be a real PITA if they're now out of state.

So:
1) Match the VIN or HIN to both the conveyance and to the title.

2) Make sure the name on the title is the name of the person you're handing your cash over to.

3) You'd be smart to insist the conveyance be currently registered. Some states (like mine) charge a penalty fee for anything not registered within a short period of time after the transfer.

4) I wouldn't buy a trailer that doesn't come with a title. You may live in a state that doesn't require one but others do. I've been told it's an easy process to get a title where none existed before. Well, if that's true, why didn't the seller get one? Is the price so high they'd rather risk driving on the highway with no plate on your trailer?

Frankly, if you don't get a title at the moment of sale, you're not going to ever get one... at least not in NC.
