Hello and thank you for taking the time to read this . The question i have is regarding a 1972 16ft starcraft ss. Did this boat have an HIN on the Transom in the usual spot for that year ? I see no evidence of there being one there having been removed . Perhaps it is in a different location that I'm not aware of . Any help would be appreciated .

Howdy, Al.

1972 was the crossover year for HIN's. If you have one it would be on the transom under the starboard corner cap.

What does the paperwork say?

Hi GA_Boater
Thank you for your response . The boat in question was owned by an elderly gentleman who passed away years ago . It was offered to me by his son to rebuild. He does not have any paperwork for the boat . In Canada when this happens the procedure is to have A signed and dated copy of
the proof of ownership (bill of sale from the seller or a signed and
witnessed statutory declaration from any person authorized by law to
[FONT=arial, sans-serif]administer oaths. The boat has its license # and serial number but there is no HIN in the usual spot . No evidence of there ever being one there. Should it be a plate or engraved ? I can't find anything on the transom in that area . I did read somewhere that they only started to put these on boats in 1972. Is it possible there was never any on this boat ?
Thank you for your time
Alex

I have a pre HIN 1966 Starcraft and the serial number plate plate was on the inside of the starboard transom and some later boats have the plate near the remote control.

My plate has the serial number and capacity info. If you have a serial number on a plate, the chances are your boat was built before the HIN was required. I don't know when Canada started using HIN's

Hi Scott
Thank you for your response. The serial number that i found is on the compliance notice on the boat . Do i refer to that as the "HIN" number or just that there is no HIN on this boat ?
Thank you
Alex

before HIN's there were serial numbers. after HIN's the HIN identifies the hull and is the manufacturer, date code and serial number

If the number does not begin with STR and followed by 9 or 10 numbers, it isn't a HIN. It's Starcraft's serial number, not a HIN.

It may be best to get a bill of sale and whatever other papers are required in your province and get in touch with the responsible agency. They probably do this very thing all the time.
