I am planning on building a boat starting in the spring, I have looked at some of the sites that I have read about from this site. However I have yet to see anything about the HIN. Do I need one, if so where do I apply for one and is there certain guidelines that i have to follow, is there a safety or certification that the boat has to go through? Another question I have is do I make it out of wood or glass. I consider myself to be really good with wood so that is not the problem. Now glass has the stength but i have never worked with it. Should I stick with what i know or is it worth it to go with glass?

Re: HIN for home made boat

I am not sure about Canadian law but in my state in the U.S. boat registration number is sent to you after registering with the T.W.R.A. (Tenn Wildlife Resources Agency) They send a number you if you do not already have one.
I assume that both Canada and the U.S. identify boats by their V.I.N. That number is applied by the manufacturer and is unique to the hull. That's kinda cool in your case because you get to make one up once you build the boat. Quackenbush1 maybe?

If Canadian law is similar to US law, the registering agency sends you a HIN and tells you exactly where to attach it. All you need to do is properly fill out the paperwork and pay the money.

in Florida, they want all the reciepts, to show the sale tax was paid. i register mine as built out of scrap. the state issues the hull # that has to be attached to the outside upper left on the stearn. dave@custommarinelabels.com makes my labels, the hull# and the weight, persons, hp labels.
