hin conflicting info???

according to the coast guard site all boats imported or manufactured in the USA have been using the 12 digit HIN since 1972. i bought a sears model 60122 today and it's listed as either a 1973 or 1974. i'm trying to figure out which year it may be for titling purposes. the full model number is 581-60122-0 the serial number is IS31F0438. can anyone explain why the sears boats only have a 9 digit serial number?? any way to tell the difference between a 73 and 74?

Welcome to iboats.

Sears did not manufacture any boats. Sears purchased boats from various manufacturer's. Until early 1981 boats made in Canada were not all on line with the USCG HIN system.

You have a few variables here. Your manufacturer is "unknown" but sold by sears (Montgomery Ward was guilty of the same thing). The iboats database may not be complete since iboats only uses data provided by companies.

You will need to ask your local fish and game or dmv what to do and how to register it.

i was thinking that since the manufacturer stock piled boats every year to be ready for sears on demand that they might have had some that were grandfathered. i doubt the wildlife and fisheries in LA really cares if it's a 73 or 74. they just want the money.

the boat does have some old delaware registration numbers that are barely visible. is there a website to look up old boat registrations??
