High pitched frequency

I have a 87 60hp merc. My question is when I took it out twice Saturday. In the morning everything sounded normal. Took it back out a couple hours later and as soon as I started it I could hear a very faint but noticable high pitched noise coming from where the key is at. It's a constant noise. Is this an alarm and why would it be sounding when I first started it up? And it's really not very loud, just annoying as heck. It was an oil injection motor but previous owner had it removed and I pre-mix 50:1 now. Any thoughts?

Thanks

p.s. motor ran great!

Re: High pitched frequency

It's a wimpy sonalert alarm in the control box. Overheat, or a short in the alarm circuit. Mine does that when I plug up the water pump with moss or a rotten log.

hope it helps

I'd have to say it's a short then. When I first started it I could hear it. Ran fine. Strong stream coming out the back of motor and it was cold when I started it. Weird.

Thanks.

ps your right about wimpy, when i'm going fast you can't even hear it.

Not weird, just cheep. The temp sender is a clixon thingie like you might find in a coffee pot.

It's easy to trouble shoot, and easy to fix. You should have an overtemp alarm working. You can have a real strong stream and still burn it down if exhaust plates passages are clogged up with debris.

hope it helps

My 650 made a similair noise last night when I went to start it but it turned out to be a dead battery. Not enough juice to even make the starter solenoid click, just the quiet high pitched whine.

We're talking sonalert, not a sizzling battery post.

Re: High pitched frequency

Well looking around I have discovered a couple things. First inside the cowel, there was a tan wire with a male end and a brown-white wire with a female connector that I would think should be plugged in. These were located about right under the starter towards the front of the motor.

The second thing I noticed is a tan wire that comes out of the control box (were the key is at) in a wire harness. The tan wire has a female connector on it but I don't see another wire that it should plug into. This is a new boat and motor to me. I know the oil injection has been disconneted so could these have to do with that? There is a 3 wire plug in the stern that I think have a purple, tan, black wire that isn't plugged in and I would think that was to the oil system. All the other connections inside the cowel look real good and clean.

Sorry for the long reply.

Re: High pitched frequency

Get a maintenance manual for your engine. In it is a wiring diagram that exactly fits your engine.

In it you'd find the color code for the wire you're looking for, and also the mounting location for the overtemp sensor, which is probably the failing part.

hope it helps

Get a merc manual. Should be in the parts list the dealer can bring up from your serial number. Then you know for sure you're looking at valid data.
