Hi everybody,
A year ago i installed few extra speaker on a sundeck. Since then i was using extra batteries to support amplifiers. There is 3 jl's amps. I had to charge batteries constantly so now I would like to use HO alternator as a replacement or to add extra alternator to 357 Merceuiser. The engine is only one year old and it have 55A alt.
What would be a good idea, to replace the stock with 120A( just worry about burning wires and still not enough juice) or to try to make brackets, double pulley and external setup with one wire HO alt just to charge amps battery, need 200A.

I will greatly appreciate your opinion.
Thnx!

Thank you Bondo. Can install the 120A straight to my engine or do i have to replace any of the existing wires.
Stupid question but why not to try install extra HO alternator. Is it not doable?
Thanx

Re: High Output alternator

How many watts total are your amps? A 120 amp alternator when running at full power would supply 1440 watts even the 55 amp can push 660 amps. I am not sure what your setup is but that is a lot of sound.

Ayuh,.... I donno,... Donno yer motor's mountin' points, 'n Donno what alternator yer gonna buy,...

Runnin' 2 alternators on a single system would drive both alternators Crazy, as the voltage signal would be all over the place,...
Neither would know whether to charge, or not,...

Also,.... Tryin' to pump Huge amperage into batteries, Boils 'em to death,...
Batteries like a long slow draw, 'n a long slow recharge,...

Re: High Output alternator

Go with the 120 alternator. You want to beef up the gage on the red wire from bat. to alt. Use deep cell batteries with a warranty, you cook em they replace em.

I am running 3 amps. 1000w sub. 600w and 660w. I would like to try to keep that setup. I was thinking on isolating the 2nd alternator so it would not interfier with base 55a setup. One wire alt and ground straight to negative on batteries. I have two gell batteries. Not even sure if i can do that and not to get boat on fire. Thanx!

You realize that Optima batteries are not gel batteries right? They are AGM.

I am not a fan of Optima batteries since the company got bought out.

Optima batteries are design to be charge faster and to disscharge faster.

Re: High Output alternator

You want all the batteries including your engine battery to have a common ground. The alternator case itself is likely it's ground.

Most alternators can be run in parallel but some will have an issue and you probably won't know if it will until you try it. Not sure what the purpose is of keeping the original alternator. Why not swap it out with the 120A one?

My suggestion is speak with the manufacturer of the high output alternator to see what they have to say about it.

Thank you, if i would put 2nd i would put 200amp single wire. 120amp is the most what i found that looks same like my original alternator. Also afraid to burn any wires in motor. I need about 160-180 amps for amplifiers and then 55 for engine.

You run a new wire from the alternator down to the starter(that's where current one goes) that is sized to its output.

Curious, How did you figure out 160-180 Amps? You playing a concert out of your boat?

Re: High Output alternator

Your spinng your wheel's trying to get a HO alt to power your system. You will be by far better off running them in parallel
