High current on fuel pump

hi does anyone know how to fix a high current on my 2011 mercury 60 hp efi
Motor. Changed fuel pump, voltage regulator same thing thanks

Don’t know for sure though an instinct of mine would be possibly someone over at Mercury marine may happen to know of an issue such as this in the past to where they may even have some sort of documentation to something like in the archives.

Using your engine serial number and a description of the symptoms, maybe try sending Mercury customer support via their website a message and see if they respond with something helpful or not.


What is your engine serial number?

What value numbers are you reading on the multimeter?

Are all the little ground wiring throughout the engine and battery cables are clean and tight at both ends?
Any heat to the wiring/s?

Thanks for the reply my motor serial numbers are 1c178178 and I did not read it with a multi meter it’s showing up on my smartcraft gauges

Verify current with ampmeter and if current is correct and matching guages try fuel regulator. If it's not bypassing causing pump to deadhead the current will go up

Is this showing as a fault code number or just says hi current?

What fuel pump did you change, the one inside the VST item 13, https://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury/oem-parts/outboard/2006/1a60413kz/vapor-separator?ref=21

Or the non-electrical pump assembly item number 1, https://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury/oem-parts/outboard/2006/1a60413kz/fuel-pump?ref=19

Also fully check over the "Connector" item number 20/21 on top of the VST fuel pump as it could be compromised.

If you haven't, looks like there are a few fuses to ensure they are in good working order, item numbers 8 and a few 25's under cover box 26,

Situation: Some of the models above may experience a poor running condition due to inconsistent ignition ground paths. These engines may not start, misfire, run for a period of time and stall, or any combination of these. These situations may be caused by paint (or corrosion) on the valve cover surfaces used as ground paths. Inspection/Test To confirm whether the engine running characteristics are related to an inconsistent ground path, install a jumper wire from the coil plate ground bolt to a good engine ground. If the engine runs well, then the inconsistent ground path is the cause of the problem.

Voltage and current are inverse. Any reduction in voltage results in an increase in current and vice versa.

Having said that, EFI motors are very voltage/ground sensitive given that the communications between the various sensors and ECU, and the control loop are voltage based.

Chances are you have a bad or failing sensor or a bad ground in the control loop.
Have the motor scanned for codes or get a good service manual and test the control loops individually.

I typically start by pulling the connector(s) on the ECU. Check the individual circuits for continuity (harness verification) and expected/published voltage and resistance values.

It says high current on fuel pump that’s the high pressure fuel pump could it be a bad fuel regulator?
The high pressure fuel pump is typically controlled and powered through the ECU

Have you pulled the connector on the fuel pump to make sure it's getting the proper voltage?

A low voltage condition would increase current demand causing the alarm

Hi, Have you verified that firstly your earthing is healthy ? Secondly, that you fuel rail filter screen isn't blocked ? And finally, the health of your main power relay is good ?

My smartcraft gauge is reads at startup 12.6 then rises to 13.1 is that normal

didnt check the fuel rail screen and the main relay will check thanks
