Can any of you in the UK comment on how the RIBs by Solent compare to Avon?

Sounds good to me Dom.

Kcook-it's horses for courses really. It depends what you want to use a rib for. Which Avon and which Solent are you looking at?

The prices are a pretty good reflection of how hardwearing the boat will be.

The military over here use mostly Avon or Halmatic (take a look at this and you'll see why)

Thanks for the quick response Nos4r2. Not really in the market for a specific RIB, just curious if there was any big difference between those brands. I had not heard of the VT Halmatics before. My, those do look like serious business!

The Halmatics are actually one of the 1st ribs ever made-the RNLI used the Atlantic 21 back in1972. The only real downfall with them is the weight-ie they aren't that quick-but they'll go through a lot of punishment.

As far as I remember they were the only boat the RNLI couldn't break when they tested the options to destruction.

Take a look at this:- http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/whitslb/capsize.htm

Neat! I wonder how large a boat those self-righting bags are effective with.

It depends on the size of bag and cylinder. I had one here for a while but it wasn't practical to fit to my A-frame so sold it on. The cylinder is about a 2lb co2 charge but I guess you could fit a bigger one and use a bigger bag-they just spin on to the valve and pullcord.

This is what they look like when off the boat:-
