Your running along motor begins to smoke, stops, you are 3 miles from shore, storm brewing, oh and your on Lake Erie. Take cover of outboard find wires fried, seperate wires, motor fires, buddy runs boat in as you watch wires making sure they don't short. No Problem.

oh,your stator and timer base are gone now!

I totally agree with the first post. My first time out I went with a veteran boater and he showed me the ropes and it was definatly worth it. It would also be beneficial to take a boating safety class, I never did because my work schedule always interfered but I think it would be a good idea.

Come on guys (and gals) you are making it sound like putting a boat on the water is the same as going on a space misison. Boating is one of the safest activies around. In 2010 there were roughly 20 million registered boats in the US and an estimated 3 million unregistered boats. When you look at the number of serious accidents it's tiny compared to say cars, motorcycles, etc.

Not to say there aren't some saftey things to cover, there are just like with anything else but, it's not the horrilbly dangerous thing so many want to make it out to be. As to boating courses, etc. they are ok but when you look at states that require it compared to states that don't there is no statistical change in the number of accidents. What it has proven is that a fool in a boat is just like a fool in a car or on a motorcycle and Darwin's law is still in effect. ;)

no space mission here, just wanted to let people know before they have loads of fun and drive up the ramp with there child on the rear bumper and falls off under trailer tire.Seen this first hand not good.A couple good stories can fix many accidents,if you dont like them go sit at the launch ramp and stop reading this post.

Re: hey you! just bought that new boat!

Sorry but not my style to not read posts. :) I just get a little tired of people on this forum going on and on endlessly as if boating is some horrible dangerous activity when its not. Sure, watch anything, (sit and watch traffic sometime) and you can see people do dumb things but they are the exception. Millions of people the world over get into boating every year and the number of injuries are very low compared to most activities. (Ever seen how many people have accidents on a golf course, playing baseball, hunting, etc. ?)

Heck, reading this forum (not just this post) would scare the average newbie into never getting on a boat.

Yep! I look for all the lakes to barren and desolate this coming Labor Day weekend.

Words of caution never hurt, and boating can be very dangerous in some circumstances... I think they have even made a hit TV show about it.
