I need to decide whether to go to the Sea of Cortez or South Florida in December for a week or two. I would have a son-in-law (fishing fool) with me.

I want to fish blue water for dorado(mahi mahi, dolphin, etc.), blackfin tuna, wahoo and other light tackle blue water fish. Roosterfish would be a bonus in the Sea of Cortez, meeting and spending some quality time with 12 Footer would be a bonus in S. FL.

We are looking at the first two weeks in Dec.

We would bring either my 17 Montauk or a 21 Outrage I am looking at (Boston Whaler, of course. What else??).

Ideas, suggestions??

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

If you are going to aouth FLorida need the 21.

Unless youa re going all the way to the keys, can fish in comfort on Gulf sie in 17, But east coast is generally 3-4 swells. It will be winter annd seas tend to be a bit more entertaining. Since you are after Dolphin and Dorado I image it will be east coast. At least you ddont have to have a bazillion miles to get to deep water. That is the issue with me in the Gulf. 35 miles to get to 85 feet of water ...YIKES, that is about as far as I can get with standard fuel load. On east coast though, 4-6 miles alreasy in 120 feet. Remember to find those weed lines and fish em hard.

Sailors delight !

Do or do not, there is no try ! :D

Hey JB, If your serious about fishing I'd be happy to show you some appreciation for all the times your reply posts have helped me in the past (and in the future Im sure) by taking you out. I am leaving for vacation 12/13/01, going to Australia, but no doubt I will be fishing, probably alone as usual those first few weeks. Winter down here is generally rougher then usual, depending on the wind direction, kingfish and sailfish are the best shots. Mahi mahi are sparse but tend to be huge when found, I have caught some over 50lbs in the winter. If your not interested then at least tell me where abouts you will be, I have many many friends in the charter, commercial business and they always tell me the hootest trends. I love fishing and my some of my favorite times during college was bringing a friend down from the north east, midwest etc. for spring break and watching them freak when hooked into a monster... Thanks for the feedback, guys. Plans are still in flux. Right now it looks like it's gonna be the Montauk in the Keys.

I'll let you know.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Sorry bout that, JB. My opening page doesn't display this low (bad eyes, means larger print settings).
I rarely toggle down to the fishing post,as there is little activity here.
I sure would like to see you down here. That would be a gas in itself :)
Mike has the water situation explained very well here. In order for blue water fishing on the west coast,You'll need to use one of the charter boats. It is pretty rough, but well worth it. Mahimahi don't run much on this side.If you decide on west caost, your best bets would be snook and reds. Flats fishing is great year-round,and the bones are huge.
Fresh water bass fishing is second to none.
I also have the week of 12/25 off,(cant say ******mass here). I'll be happy to show you around the local waters.
If you are dead set on the 'fins, your best bet is the keys or east coast. Still, mighty rough water will be prominent in December, no matter which coast you land on. The good side---NO SKEETERS!!! I haven't been out in 5weeks due to them critters.
