Help with year of Johnson 9.9

Hi all, I am new here, but have been lurking for a while.

I inheritted a Jonson 9.9 from the mid 70's and I have not been able to figure out the year on it. I went through a lot of old posts, but have had no luck yet and I was hoping some of the experts here could help.

I can't find the mosel or serial number plate on the engine. I have the number off the freeze plug on the engine block.

It is C0016280

I called a local dealer and he says he can't tell from the number.

I am including a couple pictures and between them and the freeze plug number hopefully the year can be determined.

Thanks for the quick response HighTrim!!

I checked all the links in the thread you quoted, but they all rely on model numbers, which I am afraid I don't have

All I have is the number off the freeze plug, which I assume is the serial #.

Any other thoughts?

Just from the looks I'm betting around 1975 - I got one. Great motor!

I believe the air intake is black on a 78.

Thanks guys.

I was guessing around '75, but wasn't sure.

Can you tell me what plugs to use in this motor? It has NGK's in it right now.

I have starting mixing the gas/oil at 50:1 with Castrol TCW3 boat motor oil.

Hi I have the same problem all I can find is this # C0039008 on that metalic tag in the pic above motor looks the same as the pics just wondering if you have found the year?

If you go on the Evinrude site and find the number for customer service you can call them and they can tell you all you need to know just from the frost plug number. I did it myself a month ago as my Johnson 40hp had no plate. They were most helpful and verified what the seller told me which is always nice. Best of luck. Rick.
