I have a 2004 Johnson (aka rebadged suzuki) 15 hp with electric start. I have the attached diagram which seems to indicate that jumping w/r and br would give juice to the starter, but it does not.

I replaced the starter solenoid. the neutral safety switch and fuse seem good.

Any inout would be helpful.

Nope, Im kinda at a loss. I was following a suzuki manual but I guess I’ll have to order the johnson manual to try and sort it out

I believe I suggested to TEST your solenoid be fore replacing it.---I have often said that 12 volts and wires can be confusing.

Try jumping the starter directly to see if the starter needs work.

fuse seem good. try another fuse or test it for continuity

one leg of the fuse should have 12 volts if not backtrace that wire to the +12v source

if you 12v IN and fuse is ok follow the fuse OUT ...side

it must reach the selenoid post to energize it

so follow the wire to a start switch then back to the engine where you may have a safety interrupt (neutral safety or in gear safety.)

anything wrong along the way will prevent a start up incl. broken or oxydized connections or defective switch . ( try wigging somewires while a friend keeps the key on START)

make certain the selenoid alternate post is properly grounded or goes to ground via any working interrupt feature

various motors have diff. wire schematics so you have to do tracing and voltage testing

That’s what I ended up doing this morning, all connections look good and when I’ve got it all back together it fired up, so maybe oxidation, who knows, I’m taking the win and taking the boat out tomorrow

Great ! thanks for the feedback but.....it looks like you have an intermittent issue to find .
You should spend a bit more time searching because "connnections look good" may comme back to haunt you 5 miles out :-(

recheck everything, open up all junction points and clean up all metal surfaces wiggle wire crimps or better yet recrimp wire ends

Simply discsonnect the control wire on the selenoid and put a meter on it and check that 12v start voltage for a rock ready reading in start mode . A common filament 12v bulb works to... it should shine and stay bright when you simulate START on the key and check for bad connectons or wires.

if you have no safety interupt device on the ground side of the selenoid
make certain that ground connection is good to !

If you do have a safety interupt device on the selenoid ground side recheck everything.
