Okay first post. I have spent 6 hours trying to figure out the year of my Alpha One. I am lost like an easter egg! It is a 3.0. The serial number on the plate is 0D680580. I destroyed the outdrive gear Saturday and need a new one. Do I need to know the gear ratio to order one? Will the serial number give me this info if I need to know? I am new so be gentle.

Ok just went out there and looked again. Just above the Gear housing on the Mercruiser decal is what looks like 1.98R OD677487. Maybe this helps?

keith;

The first s/n 0D680580 comes up as:

ALPHA TRANSOM 6010000ES 1992 6010000ES is the model number

From here:

http://www.marinepartsman.com/Mercruiser-model-to-year-reference-guide.html

Parts for model 6010000ES from here:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/1017.cfm

The 1:98 you refernced in your last post should be the ratio of your present unit. Here is a link to a bulletin for information:

Re: Help with my Mercruiser!

Well, I meant lower gear housing. I was cruising through the bayou and hit something. Though that I had just bent a prop, but upon review this morning (and the black spot on the ground) it appears that there is a hole in the front of the lower gear drive about the size of a dime. Now I dont know whether to buy just a case or buy a case ready to bolt on?

Ayuh,... It's an Extemely involved process to swap the guts from case to case,...
Waaaaay beyond a DIYer...

Aftermarket drives, both uppers or lowers, or complete drives are available right here at iboats...
Pretty quality stuff at about 1/2 what Mercruiser wants...
Or,...
You can Roll the Dice, 'n buy Used....

That means you have been running it without oil, and using bayou water as gear lube to get it home. I wonder what shape all those bearings and gears are in. Water is not a very good gear lube.

Re: Help with my Mercruiser!

Thats what I was thinking Don. I just got out there and took the lower housing off found a number 1623-815822-c. The web site shows 2 complete lower units. One says:
Part # 18-2400
Replaces OEM part #

MERCURY MARINE 1623-815822A53
For: Ratios 1.47, 1.62, 1.81 & 1.94
Fits: Mercruiser Gen II (1998 & up) 0L100040 & up

The other says:
Part # 18-2443
Replaces OEM part #

MERCURY MARINE 1623-8951A43
For: Mercruiser R/MR/Alpha Drives

The picture of the first one looks like what I have behind the boat, but it says for 98 and up. Could this be correct?

Re: Help with my Mercruiser!

The 18-2400 is the lower unit you should be looking at, it's a Gen II outdrive, the other is an older model.
But why in the hell would you want to buy a lower for 1800 bucks when you can get a BRAND NEW complete SEI outdrive for 1300 bucks right here at iboats, with a 3 year warranty.

Ok, educate the new guy. Where and what is this SEI outdrive. I searched the site and could not find it. I turned wrenches on 50 year old B-52's for the Air Force for 11 years, but this is my first dealings with a I/O motor or boat. I am used to jon boats with 30 horse motors on them. Please educate me and point me in the right direction.

Re: Help with my Mercruiser!

Thanks everyone. Don, I worked the last G models in the early 90's got out and came back in. Spent the last 7 years working the H models, until a knee injury forced me out 2 months ago. All of you have been a great help. Glad I joined!
