help with lower unit refit 60 hp mercury

can anyone give any advice on refiting lower unit on mercury 60 hp,have tried but cant locate forward & reverse.I belive the year is 1990. I would be grateful for any advise thanks.

Before you install the lower unit, you need to determine which gear the lower unit is already in. The prop shaft should not turn either way in reverse. It will turn both ways in neutral. It will not turn CCW when in forward gear, but will ratchet CW.<br /><br />Once you determine which gear it is in, set your powerhead shift shaft in that position. Some people find neutral the easiest, other say it is easier in forward gear.<br /><br />Describe your problem in more detail, and we can try to help.

The problem started after removing the unit to replace the impeller,after i took the unit of,the cam came of the shift rod. I am not sure in which position to put it back,i think thats why i had no reverse & forward when i put it back together

I have got a manual but it has got no refrance to what i need. Thanks for your help.
