I have a 1999 115 Johnson,(J115PLEEM), that just recently began setting off the "hot" alarm, and shutting down at WOT. I bought it new, and have never replaced the water pump. Disconnecting the lower unit seems simple, but where do I disconnect the shift linkage?
Any other tips would be appreciated also.:confused:

Best to get the service manual. Check eBay or contact a BRP/Johnson/Evinrude dealer if you want to do your own work

The part # for the service manual for that engine is 0787031. Better than the Seloc or Clymer manuals.

Seems odd that you need a water pump impeller already.

I would check the thermostat first, before you tear the water pump impeller out.

I have a 15hp here now, that had a seized thermostat.

If your motor is pissing fine and you can put your fingers on either head for more than say 4 sec.s after full warm up. Your not overheating. If you are pissing fine and it is hot then you might want to look at the thermostats.
If you have crap water pressure, then change the pump/impellar. the linkage should be under /behind the carbs in the front middle. Unscrew the pin but make sure you don't twist the linkage after you take it out cause it is one of the hardest parts of the job for the first time. I would put it half way in reverse before taking the linkage out so you can put it in drive for better linement later..

Lowbass, Pick up a service manual before you do the work. There are some specific things you need to do. For example, some of the gaskets get sealer on them. I used the Permetex Aviation stuff, and it worked well. Some of the Orings get glued into their grooves, and the waterpump liner is covered in the gasket sealer as well. The Impeller is locked onto the driveshaft by virtue of a tapered woodruff key. You need to turn the driveshaft backward to unlock it. The impeller only fits one way.

The shift linkage may be released by pulling a pin under the starboard carb. The motor must be in a particular gear, BTW.

Aftermarket waterpump exist for that motor. It will save a few dolars over OEM.

Re: HELP! with impeller replacement

The water pump kit 434421 should be a relatively simple and straightforward replacement on your motor.

Be sure to service the thermostats at the same time and you should expect another 8 or 9 years of good service.

Use the online parts store diagrams for your specific motor. The parts diagrams for the "gearcase" and "cylinder and crankcase" show the relevant parts:
http://shop.evinrude.com/

See part #49 on the cylinder and crankcase diagram for the disconnect on the shift rod. Once you pull that, you can slide the arm loose and the shift rod is free.
