Re: Help With boat ID

the enthusiasm around here is contagious.

gents, how long do you reckon it will be before he goes and "needs" the SECOND starcraft.....six months? and will he get the resto done on the first one before then, or will he be like many of us, deep in the throes of multi-resto MBS (the most virulent form)? :D will he be spending the winter in the Chieftain? inquiring minds and all that nonsense.....:D:D

I predict an early notification of a 2nd possible, prior to viewing the 1st  And a new "How do I decide" thread............:D I think I know how those posts will go....

Re: Help With boat ID

It's like you guys can read my mind. But I am sure that you are speaking from experience. I have been alternately surfing posts on iBoats and scouring CL for days. There are so many steals out there right now that I could make a second career out of cutting up Glassers and parting them out. Maine is a beautiful State with endless coastal treasures, lakes and rivers that I long to explore, many for the first time, some favorites over and over again.

I spent a career in the Navy, and never once on shore duty. I went from sea duty to sea duty. Upon leaving the Navy I took a job with Bath Iron Works building Arleigh Burke destroyers here in Maine. Within 5 miles of my house I have numerous rivers including the Androscoggin and the Atlantic Coast. Maine lobsters are going for $2.00 dollars a pound on the dock. It is pretty awesome that I can eat Lobster cheaper than Bologna. This is not a new disease. It is un-curable, but the Doc gives me the rest of my life to live.

In my house we measure dollars spent in "Boat Units" to make the pill a little easier to swallow. 1 boat unit = 100 usd. ie: "what did it cost for the new GPS for the boat, answer: 5 boat units. Ouch.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I hope you don't mind me saying this....but, I feel I am amongst like minded people here. Lol.

Great story...I really am hoping you have a v8 mercruiser in there!
You are already ahead of many of us when it comes to restoring boats, so I'd guess you'll make quick work of her once she is in your possession

Re: Help With boat ID

I hope to make this a very quick tear down and upgrade. I have the tendency to sweat the details a little too much and get wrapped around the driveshaft. If I keep the momentum going strong early and get the deck and transom replaced early I can spend the winter polishing the little bits, when the snow flies. I fully intend to get down to the raw hull fast so I can survey the condition quickly. Any repairs needed will be made and the inside will get the full Gluvit treatment.

I will make a mock up of the wiring harness out of masons twine tagged with the name of each wire. Then when the snow flies I can spend time cutting wire, and shrink wrapping into a nice neat harness. Ready for reinstallation.

I am probably going to spend the $400 dollars and have the hull soda blasted. I have utilized this process on other projects and the results are amazing. I can have the hull stripped of all coatings, in my yard in 2.5 to 3 hrs. Rinse with water and your ready for primer and paint.

I will rehab the engine inside when the weather turns nasty. The intent is to have this put back together in the early Spring so the family and I can enjoy it ASAP. Not to drag it out until this time next year. Once it is running and in the water. I can continue to tinker, upgrade, and outfit the boat to suit our needs. Wish us luck.

Re: Help With boat ID

So we went and saw the old girl today, the hull is straight. The lower unit looks good. The motor is a 120HP I-6. The shift and throttle mechanism is there. But the steering mechanism has been removed ( I will have to ask if they still have it). The gauges, and electrical seem to be in good working order. The fuel tanks are poly tanks that are near perfect. The floorboards in the cockpit, are rotted the ones in the cabin seem much firmer. The trailer seems very sound it has a flat tire. The paint on the hull is dry and flaking off. I was able to scrape it off with little effort, using the screw driver blade on my pocket knife.

I would have taken pictures, I charged the battery in my Nikon, found out when we got there that the memory card in my camera was at home. We measured the hull at about 21'4", so I assume this is a 22'. Has an alcohol stove and a sink down below.

We talked it over a lot on the way home and if he is willing to deliver, as I don't currently have a tow vehicle. We are still going to buy it.

120HP I6? Hmmm, I haven't heard of one of those?

No memory card? Likely excuse. We have heard hogwash like that before!

Looking forward to seeing what ya got there:D

Re: Help With boat ID

You know what, I never counted the plugs, I saw the 120 HP emblem and thought that was a straight 6. Good to know it is a 4 cyl.

The label plate was on the inboard side of the pilot station. Definitely a Starcraft, did not say the year. The serial/model # was all numerical. I was in a bit of a rush, I had family in tow and the baby was getting fussy.

What is the general consensus on the 120 HP. Is it a good runner? Is it enough power for a boat this size. Or should I start shopping around for a Glasser heart transplant?

Re: Help With boat ID

excellent motor, proved over millions of boating miles. probably the single most common I/O drivetrain out there. power, depends on your uses and how fast you want to go. that should push it to 25+ and be scary-frugal on fuel for a 22' cruiser. if you find motor issues, later versions of same motor are 3.0 instead of 2.5 liters, and up to 140hp, but if you do that, i'd just get the it via the glasser-with-drivetrain plan so it all talks to each other. i think the really modern port injected versions of that motor are up over that hp-wise (160+?) but they aren't going to be affordable donors yet.

go buy it even if you have to borrow or rent a tow vehicle. we once rented a pickup and used it to tow our '51 Ford F-1 back from CO; only snag was the local cop in southern CO who just KNEW that with truck rented at EL Paso airport, what was under that blue tarp back there must be the Main Load of cocaine....

Re: Help With boat ID

As it no longer has the OMC sterndrive, I have been told to MAKE SURE the transom is not rotted, as anything other than an OMC puts lots of stress on the transom and can cause damage to the gimbal bearing.

Brad--OTOH, the OMC stringer drive puts a lot of stress on the boat owner's mind......

no matter what motor or drive type, you shouldn't be going to sea in a boat with crappy transom. totally aside from avoiding damage to the gimbal bearing, it keeps the water out of the boat, and not sinking is one of the most important attributes of a boat. it's not hard to replace, just time consuming, but it's the FIRST thing you should do to any iffy old boat.

I am rather new to boating and I did purchase a 1978 Starcraft Islander with an OMC sterndrive. What kind of stress can I expect?

Basically...

Trying to maintain the Stringer.

See, it's obsolete and has been for a very long time. Marine tech's around my area won't even touch them any more. Even if you are a major motor head and can completely rebuild that driveline, parts are getting very scarce and kinda spendy.

Re: Help With boat ID

yeah, like he said.

IMHO, the best thing to do with a stringer drive is run it til it needs signif repairs, then part it out to others who can't find parts for theirs, and go buy a Mercruiser for your boat. or do a pod-n-outboard conversion.
