Bought used boat last summer in hopes of restoring it. The boat and motor had set unused for 8 years. The motor a factory rebuilt 200 hp balck max with less then 10 hours on it. I have changed water pump, thermostats, popit valves all hoses rebuilt carbs and replaced wires that were bad. Got motor to fire up first time and checked the comp. 135 on all 6. Checked oil mix system and it works but I am still getting a overheat alarm. If I shut the key off and restart it goes away only to come back on sometimes 10 minunts some times 30 minunts. Checked water pressure with newly installed gauge and it showes good pressure. also temp gauge only works when alarm sounds. Any help will be great I am about ready to pull hair out over this

Re: Help with alarm

If it comes on with the gauge, then there's a wiring problem. The Overheat sender is separate from the Temperature sender. Overheat is just an off-on switch, Temp is variable resistance. You have those connections crossed somewhere. Start at the heads. They are all tan, but some have stripes and those are important. Blue stripe is the overheat wire, straight tan is temp. I believe there are pairs of black striped ones as well.

Sitting for so long concerns me. I'd check the oil pump drive gear. If it's rusty, the gear on the crank won't last.

Re: Help with alarm

I read every thing I could on this board before I started on this motor oil pump was one of the first things i checked There is no numbers on the motor just a phone number of the company that rebuilt it from what I can tell from the manuel it looks like it is a early 1980's. Motor runs great and will push the boat just under 70 MPH on the speedo I looked at the wiring and if what I think is the senders there is one in the middle of both heads going to a common terminal block that hooks up to the alarm and the temp gauge. River is frozen solid right now but would realy like to have all the bugs worked out of it by spring time
