I have a 1998 Mariner 75hp ELPTO oil injected outboard.
I was told if the oil runs out of the resevoir, a sensor would shut it down before any damage is done. This has occurred 2 or 3 times since I have owned this boat, each time I have filled the resevoir and started the motor and continued on, however this last time, I filled the resevoir, started the moter and it ran about 5 more minutes and died. I have not been able to start it again, however it does turn over.

Am I screwed or can anyone advise what troubleshooting steps I can take please?

Hi. An alarm buzzer should sound when it’s low. But that relies on the buzzer working. If your engine has actually shut down and you’ve got no oil left…and on a few occasions…that’s never good news.
You’ll need to do a compression test to see what’s what.

Agreed.-----The motor will be coming apart.----Shocking amount of money if you can find a shop to take this on.----Not too bad if you can do the work at home.

Service manual states that with cranking compression below 120 PSI, taken correctly, expect problems.....you are a long way from that sir!

it still should fire up , the 2x 90psi cylinders will hold up the wall for the low one.
besides that compression testers are almost always on the low reading side.

that being said , at some point you are going to need to address that low comp cylinder.

have you checked spark and fuel (lanyard key in place :)) , if you have spark try a couple of shots of starting fluid into the intake and see if it pops ,it may have just oiled up the plugs

Sorry to hear the bad news there. Unfortunately it’s often the case, that certain outboards in this predicament, may be verging on or over the edge of what may be financially viable or reasonable in cost, to now put right. Especially getting anyone other than yourself to do it. Unless you’ve been lucky enough to be one of the very few that only need just a piston, top end bearing, rings and a hone of the bore. If there are any obvious signs of serious damage or missing metal to that unit, usually there will be shrapnel or similar, that’s damaged the cylinder and worse, the crank.
Best of luck anyway. And if you are going to rebuild her…on the upside, think yourself lucky that she’s not a Yamaha 2 stroke of a certain age. Couldn’t believe the price of parts for them, just recently.
