hello guys i recently got a 70's jolly roger skiboat and i got a few questions. the boat has no stringer but just has carpet layed over the fiberglass and fiberglass tabs to secure the seats down does this boat need a stringer?. the original seats are back to back with bolsters facing outwards which i cant find anywhere. also the previous owner made a metal plate to go over the transom and bolted it thru. is this good?

You might post some pictures, as I would be interested to see it. Your description is interesting. You might inspect the transom. Most of the time when a metal plate is bolted on it is to overpower, or hold the transom together.

Either I'm missing something in the question or this is something I have not seen in over 40 years. Pictures please.

The stringers should be under that flat piece of fiberglass false bottom on the floor of the boat.

idk if you can see in the pictures but someone cut a hole for the ski pole mount and inside i can see the foam and the whole has water it in and keeps on filling up when i take the water out. is this normal? can i just seal it back up?

Re: help with 70's jolly roger

If the foam is saturated (likely), you must cut out the floor (deck) and dig out the wet foam. Next you need to determine if the stringers are rotted. Sometimes the stringers will be encased in fiberglass and be intact. If the stringers are rotted, they need to be replaced. You might repost in the restoration forum.

If I had to do the job (and I did a boat very similar to that one), and the stringers were rotten, I would relace them with dry 2 by 6 or 2X8 pressure treated lumber. It would need to be scribed to match the hull and bedded to the hull with poly putty. I would cover it with heavy roving and poly resin. Then refoam the hull, and install a new dry pressure treated 1/2" plywood deck, using stainless screws into the stringers. Now cover the deck with 2 layers of light cloth and saturate with poly resin. Glass in some P/T 2X2s to the deck. You can screw the new seat frames to those.

if i replace the stringer is it necessary to replace the floatation foam?

Yep. You still have more work ahead! Pull the floor/sole up, replace the stringer and floor.
