guys,

I have a 1984 Super 25 hp Evinrude (manual start).

I am a novice with mechanical stuff, so please be patient with my post.

The choke on this engine actually pushes fuel to the carburetor (I believe).

What is the best way to start this engine (choke or no choke)?

Also, it seems after I run for a while, when I let off of the throttle, the engine dies really fast. I am either cutting off to quickly or it seems that the fuel is stopping to the engine.

When I reach my fishing destination, is it best to put the motor in Neutral before shutting down?

Your knowledge will help me tremendously.

Thank you,

Chunkin

When the engine is cold, you must use the choke to start it. Once it's been warmed up, you should no longer need to choke it to restart it unless it's been off for a while and has cooled all the way down. I had a '78 35hp and it would start every time without the choke after the initial warm up, regardless of how long I'd had it shut off.
As for it cutting off when you let off, how does it idle when you start it? Also need to know if it's tiller or controls. If it's controls, your linkage may need to be adjusted, if it's tiller, same thing, check the linkage. If it idle's poorly also, check the idle adjustment. My 35hp had a knob on the front of the carb cover for adjustments, but maybe your 25hp is a little different since it's slightly newer.
I may get yelled at for this, but in my experience, you don't have to put it in neutral before shutting it off, but you will have to put it in neutral to restart it. I know I've shut my motor off before with it in forward and had no problems, I just had to put it back in neutral before attempting to restart it.

it is always better to shift it with the motor running, but does no damage to kill the motor in gear. actually you should leave your motor running in neutral, until you are either anchored, or secured to the dock or landing.

If your "choke" is actually a primer, pull it out and push it in about 3-4 times, and leaving it out on the last pull...on a cold start. Then pull the cord. It should start on 1 or 2 pulls..let it idle and warm up, then push the primer in all the way. I like to stop my engines in nuetral. You may have to adjust your idle speed if it's dying when shut off abruptly.

It is a tiller guys.

It was running fine and then, I had a hard time starting it.

It seemed as the engine was flooded and then it would not hold an idle.

Any recommendations??

Thanks so much guys.

Chunkin.
