All,

I just purchased my first boat. It's a used 12' Sea Nymph I bought off of Craigs List. I'm looking forward to restoring it for use this summer. But as you can see from the attached pics there were some old repairs that in my opinion don't look too trustworthy. Please let me know your thoughts on how to properly repair.

My first thoughts include:

  • First check for leaks.
  • Remove old patchwork/sealant. Not sure if a wire brush sander is the right approach?
  • Apply new patch and sealant to any holes: should I use aluminum/rivet patch or fiberglass? Welding is not an option.
  • Apply a sealant to any leaking rivets. Whats a good product for use on leaking rivets.
  • Paint the inside. What's the proper type of paint to use for this?

Please feel free to provide any guidance on my approach! Looking forward to getting started.

1. Remove all crapola sealant.

2 Check for leaks.

3. Repair leaks and leaking rivets... sealant isn't a good fix for leaking rivets, that's why you'll be removing the junk sealant that's on there.

This is an easy and reliable method of fixing leaky rivets:

Rustoleum Topside is a good marine paint for the inside of a boat and for the outside above the waterline.

Get all of that old crappy sealant off the boat and clean it up real good, then check for cracks and leaks.

What does your transom look like, any wood on it?

jigngrub,

Thanks for the reply. I'll check for leaks after removing the old epoxy. Here is a pic of the transom. There is some wood in the midsection of both sides. On the inside there are two quarter size patches that were previously done. I'll have to repair those as well. However, I noticed that a previous owner also applied a layer of fiberglass to the underside of the boat and then covered it with the black epoxy you see. When i sand should I be careful with the fiberglass (sand lightly until surface is smooth), or should I remove all fiberglass?

If I find cracks or leaks after sanding, should I repair with fiberglass again or an aluminum patch?

Thanks for your help!
