Hi I have a 1988 gm 4.3l V6 merc i/o.

I put the boat in reverse to get closer to a school of fish. I wanted to go faster so I pushed the throttle down and was at around 2500 - 3000 rpms (this was only for a few seconds). The engine started to vibrate so I put it in neutral. I checked the prop and all was good. I then headed off to were I wanted to go and the boat was very sluggish with vibrations. i was not hitting the speeds that I normally get and it was overheating at high rpms. I stopped and headed back in.

I took the boat out yesterday and it ran fine no vibration, good speed, and good temp. But on the way back it started to do the same thing.

What could cause this? I know that this started when I was going in reverse. Please what happened?

Thank you

id start by checking the raw water intake vent on the drive, maybe you sucked some junk up in reverse, make sure u have a clear path of water to the motor, run a flush test and see if your getting water out the exhaust, if your not it may be a damaged impellar, overheating generally causes lose of power and vibrating and eventually death.
