Dear People on the List,

Just about ready to put my LOWER UNIT back in. The FINAL thing is the White Molex SHIFT CAM. How is it orientated when you place it back in its recess?

I am enclosing an Merc 85 HP photo someone has taken that shows their CAM in what I call the 9 O'clock position (as viewed from the front (not rear prop) top view).

Here is the photo:

Re: HELP--SHIFT CAM Orientation

Is This Position Correct For Reassembly In Neutral?

What Would The Forward Position Be?

Thanx

Re: HELP--SHIFT CAM Orientation

To me, that picture looks like they've tried to set it up for FWD gear, however the cam is one-spline-off.

The correct position for FWD gear would be with the cam repositioned one spline-tooth Counter-Clockwise.

So, if you were to have the cam positioned correctly in Neutral, I'd expect the first part of the Flat Spot at the top of the ramp on the cam would be pointing directly forward. Such that the cam blocks the Reverse Lockout Rod from above, and since it can't drop down, this leaves the Tilt Lock Hooks engaged on the Tilt Lock Pin.

You can see that further motion of the shift shaft in the CCW direction to shift into Reverse will still leave the Flat Spot positioned to block the Lockout Rod and keep the Tilt Lock Hooks engaged.

As a double-check of cam position, with the lower unit in FWD, gently rotate the shift shaft CCW until it stops. This is still in FWD gear. But ready to shift into Neutral if you move the shaft further in the CCW direction.

In this position, the MIDDLE of the ramp on the cam would be facing to the front of the lower unit. And shifting to Neutral brings us back to the first part of the Flat Spot on Top.

HTH, let us know how that works for you!...........ed
