I have 1994 Mercury Mariner 40 HP that won't start. It doesn't sound like it is firing at all. I don't know if it is getting gas or spark. I took the cover of the engine but I don't know where to spray starter fluid, or if that is even possible with this motor. Like I was saying, I am a real rookie so any help or pictures would be great!!!

I don't know about taking it to a shop, for what is a pretty common problem. With a '94 motor you've got to learn some basic diagnosis/repair things, if you are going to use it, and this is a good place to start. You'll find most of the info you need on here using the "Search" function - just be aware that not all of it is correct :( .

FYI, you spray the starter fluid into the air intake of the carb. I drilled a little hole in the plastic that covers mine, to make this easy. However, do some reading on here first. As I recall, some say don't use starter fluid on a 2-stroke - instead they recommend a spray bottle with a mix of gas and oil.

I'd check the spark first (again, "Search").

I started out where you are, and, thanks to this forum, haven't been to a shop since I had a major rehab done back in 2008.
