Re: HELP RODBOLT

You are really limiting yourself aren't you BROOKCAR?

RODBOLT is surely a source of great help, but why exclude the other 60,000 members?

At least one of your inlet needles is obstructed, leaking, stuck or connected to a misadjusted float.

Re: HELP RODBOLT

Obviously the floats are either stuck or the else the needle valves are not closing. There is no other way for the gas to get in.

Re: HELP RODBOLT

I am with JB, there are many many others that do what I do on this board as well.
you need to at a minimum replace the needles and clean the seats. I use Qtips dipped in carb cleaner. once the seats are carefully cleaned look for scratches or nicks in the seat area where the needle tip contacs the seat. are these carbs single or dual float models ?

Re: HELP RODBOLT

Thanks for the help. These carbs. are a single float. The number on the motor is 6G AETO. I ordered the rebuild kits yesterday for about $95. Are they difficult to rebuild.

Thanks

Re: HELP RODBOLT

nope
just clean them well. any carb parts with rubber or plastic dont soak longer than 20 min or so. carefully clean and spray out all passages with carb cleaner. on stubborn stuff use a strand of copper wire. do the fuel pumps as well.

Re: HELP RODBOLT

Brookcar,Let me put my 2 cents in.While youre at it, replace the fuel filter and ALL the fuel lines. It will only add a couple of bucks to the project and will be well worth your time.I had the same problem with my 85 yam 115,rebuilt the carbs and all was good. Then, in the process of changing the fuel filter,I knocked loose from the fuel lines, some fuel system clogging particulate matter.(aka crud) :D Then I got the joy of tearing the carbs down again to clean them out. If your motor is like mine the line going to the pump from the filter is bent in a U shape kind of like the p trap under your kitchen sink. All the little crud monsters like to hang out there just waiting to break loose and ruin your day on the water. And since the carbs are off anyway it will be real easy to change the lines at that time.

Re: HELP RODBOLT

Thanks for the help. I just got through rebuilding the carbs. and set the float like the dealer told me to do and the same thing again. Fuel starts running out of the carbs. Some fuel comes out of the bottom jets in the front and more fuel else where. im just about to set fire to it. Any more help would be GREAT.

thanks

Re: HELP RODBOLT

I feel your pain.I have pulled my carbs off 3 times on the bottom one and four times on the top one.now granted most of those times were my futile attempt to clean them without rebuilding them.(Im a glutton for punishment)The gas coming out of the front would have to be from a needle that is not closing.Im sure you cleaned them good enough to eat off them, but they really need to be clean enough to to use them as an tool in a open heart surgery.See this period . ,that is all the bigger piece of crud that it takes to make your float stick and ruin your day.One thing to try is GENTLY tapping the side of the offending carb with the back of a screwdriver to see if you can free the needle. You say that you have other leaks,is it coming from the bottom of the carbs? Mine was and it was the brass screws on the bottom sides of the carb.I tightend them up (be careful and dont strip them)and it helped but they still leak slightly. If I would have known that they were going to leak I would have never changed the washers that are on them and left the originals on because they were not leaking.Have you tried running it on muffs, or have you just tried pumping the primer bulb?Because I can make my carbs leak by really squeezing the bulb hard, but when the engine is running I have no problem.Hope this helps.By the way, if you do set fire to it,make sure that it is still leaking and have the engine running at about 5000 rpm to make it a better show.Since it is almost the 4th of july you could add some sparklers to it and make it the center piece of your fireworks display! :D :D :D :D

Re: HELP RODBOLT

brookcar, change the pump as robolt suggested.I just changed mine and just for giggles I pulled the old one apart to see what was in there.Guess what was there?Cruddy, crappy, rusty, dirty, nasty little hunks of who knows what just waiting to clog my carb. Most of it was from what was left of the screws inside that had rusted away.So I would check that just to make sure that your ENTIRE fuel system is clean, espeacially since your motor is almost 20 years old.

Re: HELP RODBOLT

I dont know if it would cause it but it would for sure cause a problem if you were sucking air into the fuel system.Replace the lines and eliminate the problem all together.

Re: HELP RODBOLT

Yes and no. If the float is set wrong then needle would not close soon enough and allow excess fuel to spill out.It is just like the float in your toilet tank.If it is set correctly then there could be something that is holding the needle open and allowing the fuel to overflow.Make sure that float and needle are moving freely and that there is no crud that is preventing the needle from closing all the way.As far as how to set the float, I dont have any idea how to do that.On my 115 I couldnt see how to adjust the float level. Most of the time you bend the arm on the float to set the level, but on my yam I dont think that is how you do it.

Re: HELP RODBOLT

look at it this way,at least you will have practice the next time you have to do this. :) Make sure you pull the seat out when you clean them again.Stuff likes to hang out up there and cause problems. If there is stuff in there again that means that there is still crud some where in your fuel system. And if you dont clean the fuel system completely, then you get to take the carbs back off and clean them again. And wont that be fun?
