Just bought a 1990 Bayliner. Boat had a fuel problem, had that fixed supposedly, mechanic said anti-siphoning valve in tank causing fuel pump not to work. anyhow i got the boat back ran about ten minutes then died. Took boat back to mechanic and he said I had a blown head gasket. Looks like a gasket failure on the intake exhaust manifold. i need head torque values and sequence and need valve lash procedure. reading on here last night same person had two different posts showing the position of the intake and exhaust ports differently. I have a 1990 Bayliner Capri 2050 with the 3.0 Mercruiser. Which one is first exhaust or intake. Do I need to replace the gasket between the intake and riser?

Read the "ADULTS ONLY" sticky. It has a link to a service manual for your engine/drive.

Your post is really confusing. The mechanic said blown head gasket? And you're worried about the intake or exhaust gasket? I understand needing these gaskets as the intake and exhust manifolds need to come off the heads so the head can be removed...is this what you meant?

How did he know it was a head gasket??? Compression test?

Re: help quick boats going down

They did a compression test supposedly and one of my cylinders had 90 psi and the rest had 115. The head gasket did not appear to be blown but intake gasket looked like it had a couple of compromised spots in it. i have not seperated the intake from the riser to check that gasket, and not sure if there are any other possible ways water gets into the oil on this model. This model has a shared intake/exhaust manifold is why you werent understanding me on which gasket failed.

Re: help quick boats going down

I'm getting the message on the manifolds...they're stacked one on top of the other and the ports (Intake/exhaust) alternate. Sound right? I had a 4 banger like that once.

If it's that combination, then the intake/exhaust gasket would be dry (they both bolt straight to the heads, unlike the V6/V8 engine counterpart which have the pushrods and intake passagea and head coolant passages all running through the intake manifold.

I would replace the Int/Exh gasket you are concerned about anyway, because it doesn't sound to hard, then you knwo you're ok there. Then pressure test the engine cooling system only (Not risers etc, plug them and try to narrow the leak down from there.

If there are no leaks, then it's not head gasket etc.

If there are leaks, then you're looking at the head gasket or a crack in the head itself, or the block is cracked.
