Help! Question in Removing Oxidation - Restore Shine

I want to remove the oxidation on my boat. I have read many reports on using the scotch brite- comet way, 3M products, Vertglas, wet sand, etc. My question is how can you tell all oxidation is removed? Will the finish be dull or will it be like the original color? I assume the finish will not be rough either but slick to the touch. You help is appreciated.

When I got my boat it was VERY dull. I wet sanded the whole boat. Mine was so bad I started out with 400 then went to 1000. Then buffer the whole thing. Yes it is LOTS of work. but well worth the effort. Just make sure you do not sand too much off. You will go through the gel coat. It doesn't take much sanding. You will probably be able to just go with the 1000 and buffing. Go to a place on the boat that is pretty inconspicuous and try a little first to see what it is going to look like. Trust me... the time you spend on this is well worth the effort. Looks like a new boat. Good luck.

polishing is alot of work and it wont last long

Poli-glow works wonders (it a system...cleaner...then apply poli-glow which is an acrylic clear) we used it on our sleekcraft see my resto thread on signature

do a yahoo search to find a supplier as Iboats doesnt carry this item :-(

$50 a kit lasts for a year or more....

you need to experiment with someone who has some different products to try and knows what they're doing.

you need to do the minimum to the finish, as doing any more than that only removes life.

heavy automotive compound is where you should probably start with a rotary buffer and a yellow foam pad.

If that doesn't do it, than you may have to sand (1500) to start, on the horizontal surfaces only.

I'm more a car guy than boat refinisher, but it's all the same basics....

I used Vertglas 3 years ago. It took a weekend to do a 22 ft. boat. It's beyond time to do it again. I plan to go back to polish and wax, possibly new paint.
