Re: Help power stays on with key off

You need to get a wiring diagram for the switch you installed or we need to know the terminal letters and the wire colors

Black battery - engine block ground.
Black with yel stripe is triggers kill. When in the off position of the key switch, it ties this wire to the black wire.
Red is power from battery via one terminal on starting solenoid (junction stud handy for connecting numerous wires at 12v)
Yellow with black stripe is fuel enrichment. Gets 12v when key is on and pushed in to activate FE solenoid.
Purple is switched 12v from ignition switch being ON or Start
Yellow with red stripe is 12v from key in START position to starting solenoid to energize it and spin the starter.

we need more history. is this boat new to you. did the key use to turn off everything. (tilt and trim is normally not controlled by the key on rudes but mercurys might be diffrent). do you have a volt meter?

thinking about this.. the only thing the key should turn off is the gauges, gauge lights and the engine all the other items are on the master switch of the boat

Which is the POWER switch. Very common on many manufacturers models

Ok the boat is new to me i just found it weird that with no key in i can push the power switch on the consloe and the gauge lights come on if i flip the nav light switch. Everything else that has a function on the boat works when the power switch is on, is that common?

Re: Help power stays on with key off

on a bass boat that is normal. why would you want to turn on the key to get the pumps and lights to work when you are fishing.

gauge lights should only come on with the nav lights but should remain off with just the anchor light on

Re: Help power stays on with key off

There are TWO electrical systems on your boat. The engine electrical system is separate from the BOAT system. The key switch controls only the engine and the gauges. The pair of small wires that run from the battery to the helm is the BOAT harness and powers all accessories EXCEPT the gauges and the engine. The POWER switch turns on the BOAT circuits.
