Its clean as heck I havent fired it up yet. I have changed the plugs, lower unit oil and lubed it. What else should I do before I make noise with it? Thanks, Chris

Howdy, Spur. Your engine is a 1959.

Use 24:1 fuel mix , Champion J4J plugs gapped at .030, and gap the points at .020.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

One more thing (for now)....
Is there a site that might show a schematic of the motor so a dummy like me can see what is what?

Hi, Spur. I didn't have to figure it out, I looked it up in my old Johnson Service Manual.

You can probably find a manual at a good Public Library.

There are a number of sources for parts. Many Johnson Dealers still have, or can get, them.

Twin Cities Outboard, in Minneapolis, has every part known to man.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: Help Please Johnson Seahorse 5.5

Hi Spur.
Those 5.5hps are great little motors. I used one for years until I got stupid and sold it. I would pull the fly wheel, check the coils for splits and cracks, clean the points. Then take carb apart and clean it. I'd also install a new water pump empeller, pull prop off, check for fishin line, greese prop shaft. Now these older rigs use a presure fuel system. So you need to pay special atten. to the tank, hose and connector. All gaskets, o-rings need to be in good shape. Like J.B.Cornwell said 24:1 on the mix. Don't short the oil and it might run for ever, maybe longer. If you have problems with the tank, repair it. A good tank and connector is worth more than the motors they run (in my area).Have fun hunting.

Re: Help Please Johnson Seahorse 5.5

OK, I can tell ya whatever you wanna know about bull riding and bowhunting but outboards are not my best subject....yet!

I took off the thing that has the pull cord attached. The round thing under it looks great, its smooth as glass and no wear or cracks.

I noticed a plate that had 4 bolts and some wording that said set points @ 0.20, so in all my brilliance I determined the points were under the plate.

I took it off and everything in there looks brand new. I didnt adjust anything because I am not sure how or if I need too. Heck I may put some gas in her and she will hum like a top.

I took the plugs out and sprayed a little WD40 (at a friends recommendation) to make sure the pistons were loose and they are and there is good compression coming from both holes.

What manual would I get for this thing. I know that J.B.Cornwell said this was a 1959 model. I have looked at other models and it dosent look like its that old however, Im sure J.B. knows what he talking about. I just want to get the right manual. Like I said it may and probably will run as it is.
Thanks for your info

Hi spur:
Sometimes removing this flywheel can be a tough job. Since its potmetal, the threads often strip while using a puller if you're not carefull.
If the unit runs well, you might want to rethink pulling the flywheel (unless you intend to restore her)

Just a thought...... :)

estion (for now) You mentioned me replacing the "water pump empeller", This is something I want to do, how hard is it and where is it located. If Im not mistaken, this is what pushes the water through the motor so it doesent burn it up.

Re: Help Please Johnson Seahorse 5.5

Spur, you can buy a Clymer or Seloc manual or as J.B. suggested, check one out at the libaray.Your motor is a 1959 no doubt. It probably will start. If you want it to be reliable, read the book and do the maintaince. Good luck.
