Help, please. Do I have a chance in finding this part?

Hi all,

I have offered to help an old friend to find a part for his old fishing boat's outboard engine. It is an old Tohatsu, most likely 9.9B2, as it was built before the '90s. I can't tell for sure, as not even he is certain. We live in Greece, in different locations, he can't speak English or do basic stuff on the web.

All I got are these photos of the part that needs to be replaced. I don't even know how it is called in English, I know that he looked for it in every shop in Athens and always the answer was that the engine is too old and the part can not be found.

If anyone has any idea on whether I could find it, I would be grateful. Or at least tell me how is this called in English.

Thanks in advance,
Pan.

They are also about the most available part there is, since they need replacement all the time. Often you can find points that will fit from other motors. For example, Eska outboard motors often use lawnmower points, since the powerheads are often manufactured by a lawn mower maker. Good luck..

Those are ignition " points " and also called " breaker points " as well.------Usually they can be cleaned to make them work again.
Thank you for your kind reply. So you think this one could be cleaned and work again? And if yes, how are they cleaned?

Thanks a lot. Since the engine is very old, nobody seems to have a replacement in Greece. Hence I asked if anyone knows where to find one. Thanks again for the tips.

The circled part are the contacts that need to be clean.
A spring holds them together.
If they need cleaning you can clean them by filing them gently with a nail file or fine emory cloth.

points need routine maintenance such as filing them a nail file from the wife's purse works if you dont have a points file

Points are very reliable.---If there is no spark then perhaps other parts in the system have failed.----Any testing done ?

Yes, I know the engine was taken to a technician and they said that this point is the problem and needs to be replaced. Thank you for your answer, it adds precious knowledge, as all previous ones. I will insist on that bit with my friend.
