Have a 1976 Chrysler 55hp. oil is coming out of the spark plug hole, bottom cylinder. The plug is tight and does not have oil on the plug when removed. It's not a lot of oil, however it is oil. It runs great. I have not checked the compression yet, but will soon. Any ideas or fixes without a rebuild???

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Zig

Hey Ziggy,

I think you are the only person I've seen on here that has the same engine I do (except mine is a 1975). I've been trying to get my engine back in shape (so far so good).

Is the oil seeping directly around the spark plug? Or is it coming from somewhere else and pooling up around it? I can't imagine oil coming out of the plug hole with a snug plug in it. I guess anything is possible with outboards though :) Are your threads in good shape?

Shane

Dittos what Norman ad Shane said. Oil is normal as it is part of the fuel mix. It doesn't burn as readily as the gas part, and so we get an oily discharge. but check the plugs to make sure they are the proper plugs for your engine.

Re: Help on a Chrysler 55...

Where else could the oil be coming from? Around the plug and on the head, oil appears to have sprayed out of the plug hole somehow. As weird as it sounds. An old Chrysler mechanic told me today that I had a cracked ring. I sure hope that's not the case. I will install new plugs, the correct ones and check the compression on Monday. Any other ideas or comments are certainly welcome. I know, get a Yamaha... Not a chance, this boat and engine was my grandfather's. I've got to keep her going.

Thanks guys :)
