Here is the OEM manuals for your engine and drive, assuming it's actually a 96 LK model. http://www.4shared.com/account/dir/VAYIZ7Y8/sharing.html?rnd=92
The 7797367 manual is the one you want for your outdrive. Section 3 covers the shift mechanism and it's repair.
That $47 manual your dealer has is probably a Seloc or Clymers and won't be very helpful.

Don;
the sharing link http://www.4shared.com/account/dir/VAYIZ7Y8/sharing.html?rnd=92 is DOA, I get this message
The file link that you requested is not valid.

Do I need to be a member to download the link?

You can order the complete drive seal kit for less than what the marina is probably going to charge.
I ordered one for a SX a few months ago....let me see if i can find the price.

Here is the Sierra kit,
http://www.iboats.com/Volvo-3850594-replacement-parts/dm/view_id.467797

The genuine Volvo kit is only about 5 bucks more.

Just again saying thx, I now see the volvo kit here http://www.volvopentastore.com/Seal-Kit/dm/*******.288044348--**********.637758438--store_id.366--view_id.289944 is same as the one you ordered but like you said $5 more.
I'll save $5 and get the Sierra kit.
Plus a picture is worth much for me

Don;
I tried again at home and that link is DOA (I thought maybe work was blocking it)
I see specific manuals here http://www.volvopentastore.com/Workshop-Manual/dm/*******.288044348--**********.359210660--store_id.366--view_id.357880
appears I need the SX / DP-S Drive Unit and Transom Shield
(Part # 7788881) $25, if I order this it's a specific SX drive manual and not a total engine/drive manual, but I'm ok with that.

Need a tie breaker? OEM is better.

yes, for $5 I'm buying OEM.
btw Don your links work fine now.
I feel much more confident to do a gasket/seal rebuild, given that info.
Plus, I can torque everything to spec instead of the snug feel method.

Try this link for the manuals, I think I must have posted the wrong link.

http://www.4shared.com/dir/14518392/2d00c0cc/LKsharing.html

Don;
your linked worked, i downloaded the manual, its many pages, I'll buy it for $25, good investment.
Here are 1996 NC manuals:
http://www.volvopentastore.com/1996-NC-Model-Workshop-Catalogs/dm/*******.954273007--**********.375559180--store_id.366--view_id.366365
and I'd get this one:
Our Price: $25.00 SX / DP-S Drive Unit and Transom Shield
Part # 7788881

Just double checking my model is 1996, here is valve cover plates:

and outdrive plates:

Outdrive is on worktable, with gasket kit, awaiting this weekend for re-build.

Well, finally got the outdrive shift seal installed and the outdrive back onto the boat.

A couple of things to share:

This crusted stuff was blocking 97% of one side of the exhaust flow.
(this pict from earlier post I asked what this was)
_MG_3320.jpg

I removed it, is that the infamous Exhaust flapper I've read about possibly?
I wonder how the crusted junk blocking the exhaust port on one side affected my engine.
IMG_9865.jpg

Now clear passage!
IMG_9868.jpg

The little roll pin (tension pin), when you push it into the brass part (eccentric piston) to remove the steel dowel (eccentric piston pin)
IMG_9860.jpg

You have to hit the eccentric piston with hammer, the tension pin will come out...at first I was not hitting hard enough and was getting frustrated.
(step 6)
IMG_9863.jpg

Greased u-joints and gimbal bearing

I was sorta worried on the whole re-assembly.
Followed the instruction manual, grease here, gasket sealent on 6 bolt threads, new H20 gasket, oil on spline seals (not grease), etc.

W/o a hoist definitely a 2 person job.
I lifted the outdrive close, my wife helped align the shift linkage thru, I guided the spline, moved the porp until it slid home.
Torque everything per specs and pattern. Attach shift linkage.
Got time for dinner/etc, cleaned up, next week will fill gear oil, fire up the motor, and hope everything works.

Then, time for winterization.....Yea I'm about 2 weeks behind where I usually am doing this but we are having warm weather here...

Re: Help: oil from my Volvo-Penta SX Cobra outdrive 8/28/10

by removing the ss prop you could have lightened it up a bit, other than that I use string or bungees from those fancy chrome ski tow eyes to hold up the trim rams so I dont have to remove the front anchor hardware to reattach the rams.
other than that it looks good. I warned you about that shift pin :).
its a real pain when I get a unit with a second pin installed, and yes it makes dissasembly again rather interesting.
