Hi there

My dad has a boat with a jonson ouboard on it and its doing weird things. When he starts it up there is a button he can press to put fuel through like a choke he says and that aint working and also when he turns the outboard off it keeps running. Anyone any ideas of what this could be?

Any help would be great

Re: Help Needed

His kill circuit is not functioning.

First we need the year/hp or a model number.

Re: Help Needed

It is a 1976 200 hp Evinrude

There is a faulty key switch, poor wiring, harness plug or the power pack(s) are to blame.

Look for a black wire with a yellow stripe. That is the kill wire. It goes from the "M" on the ignition switch, to the #6 terminal on both power packs. First thing that you need to do is check that this is still hooked up, and not frayed, or split.

That black/yellow wire must be connected to the "M" terminal on the ignition switch opposite the other "M" terminal that goes to ground. There will be 2 of them.

Did it just start doing this or has it done it since he got it?

Re: Help Needed

Regarding your second question, Im assuming that he has a toggle switch beneath the key switch on the remote control. That is the choke. Is this what you are referring to that is not functioning?

Re: Help Needed

Its an electric start.

When he puts the key in the ignition he should be able to push it in to prime the engine before he turns it to start but it wont prime. But if he turns it manually it will prime. Once its been started it is fine but its the initial start.

Any ideas?

Re: Help Needed

Did he get the kill circuit figured out?

The normal operating position is to have that red lever positioned over top of the solenoid and aimed at the other end of the solenoid. Is this how he has it? Pumping the fuel primer bulb up until hard fills the carburetor float chambers, but that process also applies fuel pressure to the primer solenoid. Is this his starting procedure?

1. Pump the fuel bulb up until hard,
2. Crank engine and push the key in at the same time,
3. When the engine starts, release the key

Re: Help Needed

First thing is to be sure of what you have.

The 1976 model number given is for an Evinrude 200.

It came with chokes, with choke plates.

The problems sound like the harness plug or the ignition switch.

It did not come with a push to choke ignition. It came with a toggle switch to choke.

Exactly my thought as stated in my original posts. I have that exact motor, however in Johnson format.

Clairex, did your father just get this outboard?

Re: Help Needed

If the motor has traditional OMC wiring to the remote control, the attached link will lead you to specific wiring information that should help you. Please copy it to your browser without the quotation marks:

Probably the best electronics manual available is the CDI Electronics Troubleshooting Guide, which is available for free download at this link. It is worth saving to disk or printing, but it is large. Copy to your browser without the quotation marks:

Re: Help Needed

Hi guys

My dad says thanks very much its all sorted now :D.

The problem was there was no contact at the power packs so it wasnt sparking or something lol.

He has one more question tho:

Where does the wire for the rev counter connect to as it has been disconnected to?

Re: Help Needed

The tachometer needs three wires, four if you want the lights.

The positive and negative lines are purple and black, respectively, and come from the ignition switch.

The sender wire is grey and runs from the engine's terminal block, through the main wiring harness, and then to the tachometer. Depends on the control as to how it is wired at the helm, the sender wire is always grey, though.

Tell dad to be careful not to let any voltage run to the grey wire as it will destroy the rectifier or worse.

If he wants the lights, take a blue wire off the light switch or run it off the blue wire on one of the other gauges.

Re: Help Needed

Hiya

He says the wire has a grey outer coat but has an armour coating inside then a blue wire. Is this the right one?
